Thursday 20th April 2006: Albie Donnelly’s Supercharge

Founded in Liverpool in 1974 by saxophone player and singer Albie Donnelly, Supercharge soon enjoyed considerable success, which included recording with Virgin Records, touring in Australia, opening for Queen in Hyde Park in front of an audience of 100,000 and supporting BB King and Chuck Berry on European Tours.

Over the intervening years, Supercharge has evolved from its origins as a rhythm and blues band to become a leading exponent of authentic, powerful soul, blues and swing. Fronted by the marvellous Albie Donnelly, who provides bluesy vocals and soul-drenched sax, the band boasts a terrific, international line-up of musicians, whose energy and professionalism combine to form a vibrant and truly entertaining ensemble.

Tuesday 16th May 2006: Rocky Athas

Texan guitar-slinger Rocky Athas returns to the UK, having made such a huge impression last year – not least at The Cavern in Liverpool. His masterful guitar playing is wonderfully complemented by the excellent, bluesy vocals of Larry Samford and a top class rhythm section. Their music encompasses slow blues, ballads, Stevie Ray Vaughan-style shuffles and powerful blues rock.

Rocky grew up playing guitar with his pal Stevie Ray Vaughan. By the age of 23, he was honoured as one of the ten best guitarists in Texas by Buddy Magazine’s Texas Tornadoes. SRV received his induction two years later. They hold this honour with such noted guitarists as ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Johnny Winter and Jimmy Vaughan. In recent years, he has recorded a number of highly acclaimed albums on the British-based Armadillo Music label.

Liverpool Marina is situated at Coburg Wharf, Sefton Street, Liverpool L3 4BP.Tickets for the concert (£10 each) are obtainable from John Welsh on 0151 428 2855
