Promoters:

Pete Evans (tel: 01948 770215 pete@hookerblues.co.uk)

Paul Taylor (paul@hookerblues.co.uk)

Ian Wiliams (ian@hookerblues.co.uk)

Club Profile: the Worthenbury venue is under the aegis of the promoters of the well-established Hooker Blues Club that meets at Wrexham Rugby Club. The venue is home to the extremely popular Going Up The Country series of acoustic gigs. Artistes who have already appeared at the club include Otis Taylor, Eddie and Frank Thomas, Kent Duchaine and Lisa Mills (all from the USA) and Phil Bates (of ELO Part 2 fame), The Hokum Hotshots, Harry Skinner & Dave Saunders and Michael Messer from the UK. The club provides limited bar facilities, which usually include a barrel of real ale.

Please note that the picture above is atypical of the venue. Normally the seats are arranged less formally, around small intimate tables; the picture above shows a particularly high ticket sales night when Otis Taylor was featured recently . For this event, to satisfy a higher than normal demand for tickets, the seats were arranged in rows.

Review: Phil Bates – Harbourside Club, Liverpool

Amid a busy schedule of gigs with Bev Bevan’s Move and regular appearances in Germany as a member of a trio, we were delighted that Phil Bates could squeeze in a solo performance at the Harbourside Club last Wednesday. In contrast to his more usual ensemble playing, Phil donned another hat to deliver a programme of blues and blues-related material in acoustic mode.

His own jazzy and laid back “House Of Blues” set the tone for the evening. Another original composition that graced the first set was the African-rhythmed instrumental “Township Tourist”, which preceded a magical version of Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cried Mary”, boasting beautifully played, intricate guitar work and fabulous vocals. There was another self-penned number, “The World’s Gone Crazy”, which combined clever lyrics with a driving beat, before the set was concluded with the high-speed instrumental “Broken Fingers”, appropriately described as Celtic punk.

The second set incorporated a tribute to the music of the Beatles. There was a marvellous version of “She’s A Woman”, with more tremendous artistry on guitar, and a wonderfully innovative, instrumental medley, which included “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, “She Loves You” and Norwegian Wood”. There was a Keb Mo number and a superb rendition of Frankie Miller’s “Jealousy” before the set ended all too soon with the Rolling Stones favourite “This Could Be The Last Time” and Bo Diddley’s “Before You Accuse Me”. Just before that, the original “Wait For The Sh*t To Hit The Fan” encouraged the punters to conquer their inhibitions and shout the offending word in collective response. Was it my imagination that the female voices significantly outshouted the male ones?

It was another splendid show that fully maintained the exceptionally high standard promoted by John Welsh at the Harbourside. Phil Bates exudes talent, combining great vocal quality with brilliant musicianship, warmly presented in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We are already looking forward to his return.

Review : Cadillac Kings – Chester

Last night the Cadillac Kings played my local venue – Telford’s Warehouse, here in the beautiful, historic city of Chester. I love The Cadillac Kings and I love Telford’s however, I think it’s safe to say that the two are not the ideal partners. In the hot and smokey back room of the club, the band played extremely well for their contractual 60 minute set. The sound however, did not suit the style of the band. A rootsy and vintage sound, like the Cadillacs do so well, does not work when it is heavily compressed through an overworked PA. Blues needs room to breathe to bring out the highs and lows of the songs; all of the life and soul of the music seemed to have been squeezed out and somehow lost. The confines of the venue on a Friday also dictate that the band stick the uptempo numbers. Did I mention that it was L..O..U..D..!

Still, a great time was had by all and I look forward to seeing ther Cadillacs playing at a more roots friendly gig and I look forward to seeing a harder-edged band playing at Telford’s. I took a couple of pictures that can be seen here. I also captured a short video that is uploaded to YouTube. Both photos and videos are quite dark but then, the venue is quite dark.

Birthdays and Deaths

I missed a couple of anniversaries yesterday.

On 27 October in 1977 Peg Leg Sam passed away.  He is not a blues legend, however I posted this because there is an excellent 30 min documentary available on him at this site.

On 27 October 1949 Clifford Antone entered the world.  For many years he owned the famous blues club Antone’s that was the “home of the blues” in Austin, Texas.  Clifford passed away earlier this year.

Happy Birthday Sonny Terry

Yesterday was the birthday of one of the all time greats of the harmonica (I missed it yesterday – sorry).

Let’s all reflect for a few seconds on the amazing tone and talents of Mr. Sonny Terry, born 24 Oct 1911 in Greensboro, GA.

As ever, there are a couple of YouTube clips for us to enjoy – this one and this one.

Today’s YouTube is the Charles Ford Blues Band

I didn’t manage to dig up a YouTube of Mark Ford but luckily we have someone cleverer than me contributing to the site.  So a big thanks very much to Grahame Rhodes for finding this clip of Robben and Mark Ford.

Nico Wayne Toussaint – Mercy Mercy Mercy

Great to hear a good harp player covering the great tune Mercy Mercy Mercy. Nico Wayne Toussaint certainly manages that on his new CD “Transatlantic Live”

Check out Nico at his official website, where you will find pictures, links, sounds and videos (you know – the usual stuff). The best video is this one.
You can hear a few samples of the album from here, alternatively, here’s a direct link to a highly recommended clips of Mercy Mercy Mercy.

Thanks to Beardo from Bandana Blues for featuring this CD a couple of weeks ago on the podcast.

Lastly – here’s the NWT video that you can’t get from the website.

(don’t you think I did well by not using the obvious Merci Merci Merci pun? – damn! failed at the last hurdle)

Today’s YouTube is Bruce Willis and Robben Ford

You know Bruce isn’t a bad player and may be the most famous decent harmonica player in the world.  Anyway onto the clip – it’s from the 1980s and Willis is grooving with the excellent Robben Ford.

I have two closing thoughts….

1.  It’s a great tune to play on the harmonica; pretty much any half decent player could sound OK huffing and puffing on that one.

2.  I wonder how much better Robben Ford’s brother and ace harmonica player Mark Ford would have been in that situation.
