Review : Last night’s gig

Last night I went over to Warrington to see the double header – Blues from the Big Room. I am not much of a reviewer so I hope that Grahame will be putting down a few choice words that will make a proper review. In the meantime, here are my unstructured thoughts. I apologise to all the grammaticists for the split infinitives – writing reviews always brings out the devil in me.
Ian Siegal was on first and once again showed why he one of the big draws on the current scene. He always plays with passion and quickly got the substantial audience involved and enjoying themselves. Ian is not an out and out blues act; he successfully brings in touches of Tom Waits and C&W into the mix (he actually manages very convincing Tom Waits and Johnny Cash style vocals). Once again I was very impressed with the whole package, Siegal’s vocals and guitar were very strong and the band were once again rock solid and clearly having fun. Their solidity is not surprising as the band have recently celebrated 10 years together.
The Nimmo Brothers followed on and played an incredibly loud set of swaggering blues rock. I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of the Nimmo Brothers, the band are supremely confident and very talented both instrumentally and vocally, but I find them a little too much especially their ‘look at me, look at me’ attitide. They powered their way through a set of shuffles, minor-keyed moods and out and out rockers. There was a lot of guitar work and not much light and shade. I got to thinking that the way that the Nimmos delivered the song “Shape I’m In” was less like these and more like these. Don’t get me wrong, if you love your blues from the rockier end of the spectrum, then these guys are tremendous, they just did not work for me. The majority of the crowd loved them and I understand why. Why don’t you leave a comment and let me know what you think.
I didn’t take any pictures of the Nimmo Brothers but luckily I stumbled across these pictures from NinaMarieLouise
Finally I would just like to say what a great job by Ray and Barbara putting this show on. Thanks guys.
