Review : Cadillac Kings – Chester

Posted on: Saturday, Oct 28, 2006

Last night the Cadillac Kings played my local venue – Telford’s Warehouse, here in the beautiful, historic city of Chester. I love The Cadillac Kings and I love Telford’s however, I think it’s safe to say that the two are not the ideal partners. In the hot and smokey back room of the club, the band played extremely well for their contractual 60 minute set. The sound however, did not suit the style of the band. A rootsy and vintage sound, like the Cadillacs do so well, does not work when it is heavily compressed through an overworked PA. Blues needs room to breathe to bring out the highs and lows of the songs; all of the life and soul of the music seemed to have been squeezed out and somehow lost. The confines of the venue on a Friday also dictate that the band stick the uptempo numbers. Did I mention that it was L..O..U..D..!

Still, a great time was had by all and I look forward to seeing ther Cadillacs playing at a more roots friendly gig and I look forward to seeing a harder-edged band playing at Telford’s. I took a couple of pictures that can be seen here. I also captured a short video that is uploaded to YouTube. Both photos and videos are quite dark but then, the venue is quite dark.

As opposed to the usual boring review I thought I might just add my observations about the gig. Telford’s is a great place but a blues band like The Cadillac Kings on a Friday are a bit like a fish out of water. The pre-gig music from the DJ kills any conversation wherever you are in the venue and the soundman has the band playing far too loudly! Still, to the positives – great to see Lionel, Jen and Jan and also Barney and Jill from Runcorn. Up-tempo one-hour set from the band, as good as ever. The band’s own songs are great, but you can’t beat a bit of Nick Curran and James Harman! Nice to have a good natter afterwards, even though Pottsy kept getting me and Ken mixed up! Nice to meet TC (new-ish bass player). Woke up with a throat as if I had 20 Bensons, and I don’t smoke! Still, great to see the band again – top guys – and just a half-hour stroll from home.
