Bargains in the sales

It looks like Grahame has been out in town this week and sends in the following report…..

I know that a lot of bluesinthenorthwest.com readers like Gary Moore – the Music Zone chain have a couple of his more recent releases at an absolute snip! “Back To The Blues” from 2000 is available for £1.97 and from 2004 “Power Of The Blues” is going for just 97p! The earlier one is by far the better with decent covers of “You Upset Me Baby”, “Stormy Monday” and Johnny Guitar Watson’s “Looking Back” (the Feelgoods used to nail this!). Obviously a while stocks last job, but the Chester store had a good lot!

Some great Blues for 2007 in Warrington

Ray and Barbara have set up a great line of Blues for 2007 in two locations in Warrington.
19-Jan – Paul Lamb
23-Feb - The Stumble
02-Mar - Ian Siegal
10-Mar - Mike Sanchez at Alford Hall
23-Mar - Marcus Malone
13-Apr - Johnny Mastro & Mama’s boys

The three March gigs are specifically to celebrate 10 years of Warrington Blues Club.

Of all the shows I’m particuarly looking forward to Ian Siegal (after all he was my gig of the year for 2006) and Johnny Mastro, who to my ears sounds to be influenced by Lester Butler and the Red Devils more than any other band I have heard. The Mama’s Boys get a lot of airplay from Spinner on the Bandana Blues podcast so I have heard quite a few tunes already.

TV highlight of the year

Yeah, yeah, I know it’s not blues but I still think that the live performance of “Crazy” by Gnarl Barkley on TOTP earlier in the year was one of the highlights of the TV year.  If you haven’t seen the clip before then I strongly advise you to check it out.  I liked the electronic verion of the song pretty much but this military drums and soaring strings version is something special.  What a great song and what a fabulous vocal performance.

Enjoy!

Today’s YouTube will get you dancing.

Jonny from The Stumble sends his New Year greetings to all readers of bluesinthenorthwest.com in the form of a YouTube clip. Jonny has picked a little peach of a tune from the 1960s.  If this clip of Junior Walker and the Allstars does not get you dancing around your keyboard then you have a hole in your soul.

You may read more about Junior Walker both here and here.

Today’s YouTube is not Blues

Today’s YouTube video is not blues at all but is from one of the Jazz Masters – the fabulous Duke Ellington. Imagine being big enough to be able to carry a band of that size these days. That’s how important Ellington was. This is a great clip, showing his fabulous orchestra. I especially love the trombone solo – very expressive indeed.
My favourite Jazzer of all time is the legenday Earl Grey.

New radio station launches

Christmas Day saw the launch of an all-new digital radio station called thejazz.
Available on DAB, on Sky and NTL’s radio channels and online at www.thejazz.com, the station will play a range of music across the jazz genre and plans to engage listeners in a debate throughout 2007 by asking listeners to discuss “What is jazz?”

Darren Henley, station manager of Classic FM and thejazz, says: “Just as Classic FM has taken classical music into the mainstream, so we want to make jazz a part of everyday life in the UK.”

The digital-only station, which went on air at 9am on Christmas Day, will operate as a sister service to GCap-owned Classic FM.

Like Classic, GCap hopes theJazz will develop as a brand across live concerts, CDs, books, podcasts, downloads, a website and TV programming.

According the www.thejazz.com website

theJazz will play a wide range of jazz genres such as bebop, swing, cool jazz, trad, blues and modern jazz.

Some of the artists featured on the station will include Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Charles Mingus, Louis Armstrong, Weather Report, Branford Marsalis, Denys Baptiste, Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall and Madeleine Peyroux to name but a few.

Our full playlist will follow in January 2007.

Only time will tell just how much of the programming will be blues. I will pass on more information as I receive it.

Today’s YouTube is Jesse Taylor

Man could this cat play. This is a fabulous clip of the late Jesse “Guitar” Taylor from Lubbock, TX. Tell you what – he’s also got a fabulous band with him – that night in the Cricketers in London must have been a blast. The groove on this song should be bottled and sold.
Thanks to Grahame for finding this – it’s a peach.

RIP Red Archibald

I agree with Chuck Nevitt entirely on this one.  I had not heard of Red Archibald so was a little unmoved when I heard that he has passed away.  However, after reading Chuck’s post below, I checked out the 10 min promo clip and really enjoyed the clips and the voiceover.

You can read Chuck’s  post on Red Archibald on the link below.

Great Wanda King Video

It’s great to see Freddie King’s daughter Wanda King keeping up the family Blues tradition. I recommend that you take a look at Don O’s great Dallas and Fort Worth Blues site. It’s at www.bluesdfw.com.

From BluesDFW you can get to Don’s Blues Scene Sampler Project and recently posted is a clip of the Wanda King Band in action live at a Dallas club called Pearl on 02 Dec this year. Very good it is too.

Cool T-Shirt

I don’t normally wear t-shirts, however I did find this one quite amusing. I wish that some of our UK bluesmen would take note.
