Pick of the year

Posted on: Tuesday, Dec 19, 2006

UPDATE : Moved back to the top of the page on 19 December.
Grahame suggested a little pick of the year posting and I think this is a fabulous idea. So post a comment or contact me with your favourite live gig and CD of the year.

Here are Grahame’s to start the ball rolling…

Live-wise I would go for the two Ian Siegal gigs in Warrington; a few albums I have enjoyed are the Johnny Mastro & Mama’s Boys release and also the Memo Gonzalez & The Bluescasters live offering! Still playing Ian Siegal’s “Meat & Potatoes” a lot as well – even though this came out last year!

and here are mine…

For live gigs then my clear winner is Ian Siegal’s first Warrington gig earlier this year, so I’m 100% with Grahame on that one. For CDs – I would have to say that the one that I have played most this year has been Alex Schultz – Think About It.

It’s been a cracking year for gigs and albums. Very difficult to choose one in each category. Gigs: Popa Chubby and Eddie and Frank Thomas (both at Southport Arts Centre), Nicky Moore at Warrington Alford Hall and The Stumble at The Harbourside, Liverpool. Albums: Joe Bonamassa’s You & Me, Walter Trout’s Full Circle and The Stumble’s The World Is Tough. Combining both categories, I guess The Stumble are my choice overall for the year.

Thanks for replying Lionel – I too loved The Stumble album. In my humble opinion Colin Black is one of the best guitar players around – he does the Freddie King/BB/Peter Green stuff as well as anyone in the UK!

It’s also great to see Lionel voting for The Stumble, them being locally based and all that.

I haven’t seen them for ages so I am very much looking forward to the next time.

Well done lads!

For me 2006 was my introduction to blues. Live acts seen were – Robert Cray, EC, Walter Trout, (‘The Stadium Gigs’). Colne Festival, James Hunter (What a voice!), Sean Webster, Nicky Moore (Superb performance) and Out of the Blue. (Great guys, Great act and Great atmosphere at the Harbourside).

Pick One? James Hunter Live at Carling Academy CD ‘People Gonna Talk’

I’m anticipating 2007 should be even better as ‘The Stumble’ will be the opener.

2 Americans for me 1 younger and 1 older,
The best gig by some way Rocky Athas @ Harbourside – a near perfect evening (just the beer lets the place down – but John likes it!!) and Joe Bonamassa probably the Southport evening rather than the Birkenhead, but both excellent
