Worthenbury, North Wales (map)
Here is some advance publicity on the The Goin’ Up The Country Festival, Worthenbury on Saturday June 30th
We have confirmed Big George Brock and Bill Abel from Clarksdale as headliners. Harpman Big George is a larger than life character who has been around the Mississippi blues scene for years and has won a couple of WC Handy awards over the last few years. As a younger man he won many amateur heavywieght boxing titles before going professional. He also was one of the few men to knock out Sonny Liston. He however gave up fighting to bring up his family (he is rumoured to have fathered 43 children!!) and to concentrate on the blues club he opened in St Louis. Whilst there a couple of drunks he’d thrown out returned with guns and attempted to kill him. However, they missed but sadly killed his wife instead.
This man then is entitled to sing the blues.
Bill Abel is a fine guitarist who has played with many of the greats in Mississippi over the years. This will be their first visit to the UK and their only appearance in the North West on a 10 gig tour.
Backing these two will be Johnny Hewitt’s new, yet to be named, band who will also be putting in a set themselves.
Also from the USA will be Lisa Mills a great favourite in the area following her storming introduction at Dragon Blues in 2004, and top UK resident American Michael Roach, a very fine acoustic guitarist.
There will be a couple more acts to be confirmed over the next week or so and the format will be the same as last year with the main stage backed up by an acoustic tent. There will be camping and a caravan area, beer tent, and hog roast and the expected times will be 3-11pm. Ticket price and contact for tickets TBA.
