Hamsters at Telfords

Here’s a quick reminder that the Hamsters are on at Telfords Warehouse in Chester on Thursday.

I’m not sure what time bands start on Thursdays so I’d check with the venue.

I can’t go as I am off to Livebait in Manchester.  Buen apetito.

New Matt Schofield CD – 1st May

I know that there are a lot of Matt Schofield fans in the region. Matt’s new CD “Ear To The Ground” will be available on the Nugene Records web site From May 1st. It hits the shops in Europe May 21 and elsewhere June 19.

The press release says that this is undoubtedly Matt’s best CD to date. Nine original numbers (and two superb covers), great guitar playing and groovy Hammond organ, and Matt’s trademark mix of Blues, Funk and Jazz.

You can hear clips of the album right now on Matt’s MySpace site http://www.myspace.com/mattschofield

A wealth of Johnny Mastro videos

The site BeachBlues.net has a wealth of Johnny Mastro video clips along with other SoCal bands.

All the clips are Real Player clips (which I don’t like) but the quality is good.

Geoff Muldaur at Worthenbury – TONIGHT

Last night there were still a few tickets left for tonight’s Geoff Muldaur gig at Worthenbury.

Otis Taylor on tour with Gary Moore

There is great news for fans of Otis Taylor and fans of Trafficker.

Otis’s new cd “Definition Of A Circle” is out today on Telarc. It is without a doubt his strongest release so far featuring some great guitar from Gary Moore plus Charlie Musselwhite features on one track.
However, the chance has arisen for everyone to see Otis in the area in May/June as he has been asked to support Gary Moore on his UK tour which is taking in 12 dates at all the UK’s major rock venues.
Locally they will be appearing at The Liverpool Phil on Thursday 31st May and at Manchester Apollo on June 2nd.
Even better news is that Otis has asked Tommy Allen and Craig Bacon from Trafficker to be his guitarist and drummer on the tour – a great chance for them to show off their talents on the tour to a wider audience.

UPDATE 27 April 2007 – I had to remove the picture of the CD sleeve as the photographer objected to me using it. I respect his wishes and I wonder if he has also contacted Amazon tohave the CD sleeve removed from there.

Review – The Spikedrivers – Alexanders, Chester – 19 April 2007

Pete Evans sends in the following review of The Spikedrivers at Alexanders Jazz Cafe, Chester on 19 April 2007.

Went to Alexanders last thursday for the first time in ages to see The Spikedrivers. Ian Paul and I took the total in attendance to 21, a good crowd for Alexanders these days, I’m told.Having said that, I’m delighted that the venue is non smoking before its due date and the beer was good.

The band really were excellent with Ben Tyzack showing some excellent skill on guitar (particularly slide) backed up by Constance Redgrave on bass and various other instruments of different description (including a plover egg whisk for her washboard!) and Maurice McElroy on drums and various percussion instruments.

A good number of the songs were from their latest cd”Ain’t It Real” including Devil’s Breath, Mornin’ Train and Blues To The River all featuring Ben’s excellent vocals. However, Constance took the lead on the haunting Angel Of Blue with it’s underlying voodoo like rhythms and sounds and Maurice took the lead took the lead sat on his percussion box, a cajon, on Goodbye Mr Blues.

Covers included Dust My Broom and Kind Hearted Woman Blues by Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters’ Can’t Be Satisfied but the pick of the night was Little Red Rooster with brilliant slide by Ben.

An excellent night’s entertainment by a really good tight trio with plenty of variety and interest.

Hopefully you can see them again soon at Worthenbury once a date can be finalised.

Ian Williams kindy sent some excellent pictures.
