Jimmy Burns DVD Review

Posted on: Friday, May 11, 2007

This looks like a great purchase for blues lovers. I saw Jimmy Burns at Wrexham few years ago and he was absolutely brilliant. The real deal. Top class!

Here’s a review of his recent live DVD release on Delmark.

Top stuff – I was at Wrexham that night, top show and a lovely guy and definitely the real deal. Seem to think that it remains his only UK club date. Here’s a link to the dvd trailer . . .

Hi Fellahs,
Yes it is still his only UK club date, although he has done one or two festivals since. That was one of our Hooker’s top nights and as you both say, it was memorable. He was backed by The Harpbreakers that night (what became of Nigel?). I still see him on trips to Chicaago and I’ve spoken to someone about the possibility of a UK tour in the future. In my view he has one of the finest soulful voices in blues.
We recorded that Hooker’s gig with his permission and I still play it quite often. I also did a filmed interview with him that night which I may publish one day. I haven’t got the dvd yet but it’s on my wish list.

Yep – a fabulous voice indeed.

Thanks for reminding me that it was the Harpbreakers that backed him. That too was a refeshing change, it is my experience that UK pickup bands rarely have the taste, groove and restraint to back up a proper blues act. I have seen many visiting Merkins ruined by a crap Britplod pick-up band.

The Harpbreakers did a great job that night.

The Harpbreakers were probably the first ‘proper’ blues band I saw in Chester, when they used to play Jones’s at the end of City Road, and then many more times at Alexander’s, etc. Obviously Tony Roach is out with his brother now, and I have seen Andy Sykes, the bass player, in Telford’s a few times. However Nigel and Big Vern seem not too be doing anything these days. Let’s hope one of them sees this and gives us an update!
