Gig : Kirk Smithhart – Wrexham – 01 June

Posted on: Sunday, May 13, 2007

Friday June 1st at The Goulbourne, Borras Park, Wrexham

The Kirk Smithhart Band are making a short stopover after their European tour and it will be their 1st and only appearance in the area. They are from Memphis and Kirk wonThe Albert King award for best unsigned blues guitarist for the USA in 1999. He is backed by brothers Rome and Doug McMinn (Mojo Buford’s drummer on the ’05 tour) and guesting with the band will be Tommy Allen taking time off between dates with Otis Taylor on the Gary Moore tour.
It promises to be an immense night of blues and the news is that it is free although if possible we’d like you to make a donation (£5 if possible) to help cover the lads gig fees.
The Goulbourne is easy to find if you remember the way to the rugby club. On the Wrexham link road off the Gresford roundabout, you turn right on the roundabout one before the one for the rugby club (It’s signed Borras I think) and the Goulbourne is about half mile on the left set back off the road.

Just checking for feedback on Kirk’s performance. I’ve been a fan for years and I was wondering how he’s being accepted across the pond….

Hi Fredacooper
This was Kirk’s first visit to the UK. I arranged 4 gigs for him and was able to get to the gig in Swansea @ The Tawe Delta Blues Club.
He went down a storm and the Swansea audience regulars including ex Dire Straits drummer Terry Williams (co organiser) reckoned he was one of the best guitarists they’d seen in years. His slide version of Jimmy Reed’s Big Boss Man and Hendrix’s Little Wing were truly amazing.
Apparently the gig in Wrexham was also superb with The Goulbourne Pub landlord Mark Reynolds saying it was one of the best live nights he’d ever promoted with Kirk being joined by top UK guitarist Tommy Allen and the pair of them jammed the last hour superbly with Kirk’s drummer Doug McMinn moving over to harp thus allowing Tommy’s drummer Craig Bacon to take over on the skins.
Kirk has asked me to organise a full UK tour next year and I’ll certainly be looking to sort something out.
