My route to the blues – Bronteblues

Posted on: Saturday, Jun 9, 2007

Well, funnily enough, it was buying a ‘pop record’ 5-4-3-2-1 by Manfred Mann …it had just replaced ‘Wipe Out’ as RSG theme on Friday evening (‘Your weekend starts here!’) …..this led to several more MM singles and the ‘Five Faces of Manfred Mann’ LP. On the LP were their takes on ‘Smokestack Lightning’, ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ and several other blues classics which sent me on a search for the originators (Actually there was a ‘Howling Wolf EP’ on the record stall on Keighley market!)
The rest, as they say…….
It was wonderful, though, 40 years later whilst opening for the Blues Band with my young outfit ‘The Yellow and Blues Band’, to be able to announce “40 years ago I joined the Manfred Mann Fan Club and now here I am playing through Tom McGuiness’ amp…”
