Review: Harper – Worthenbury – 27 July

Harper

Goin’ Up The Country, Worthenbury, Friday July 27th

This was the first ever gig in the UK for Australian roots singer and harp player Harper and was a warm up gig prior to his appearance at the Maryport Festival the next day. Now a resident of Michigan he was backed by his young enthusiastic band of 22 year old musicians, Tyler Mac on guitar, Ralph Reitinger on bass and Marc Dixon on drums and the fact that they play over 240 gigs each year in the USA, showed as they were incredibly tight from the very start.

Harper has immersed himself in the culture of the Aborigine people of his homeland and this has led him to introducing the digeridoo into his music and so it was on the opening track I’ll Go Home that we heard the wonderful effect of this instrument as it introduced the rhythm section followed by the guitar and then his superb soulful vocals . This track was taken from the new Blind Pig release, Day By Day as were the next two: Just What You’re Looking For and Sure There’s A Place, all three tracks demonstrating Harper’s superb harmonica.

The next track Does Anybody Really Care followed a short intro about what is happening to the indigenous people before Harper made his first move into traditional blues with an outstanding version of Sonny Boy Williams’ Help Me with an extended harp solo which drew rapturous applause.

Big Brown Land again demonstrated the digeridoo and referred to the view of Australia from the air and was the cue to describe the two instruments called Mary and George in detail.
Way Down Deep Inside was the title of his award winning Aussie release and this was followed by the two final tracks of an hour long first set, the superb rocking Soul Food showcasing the band members in turn and the politically motivated Get Out Of This Mess with its reference to George Bush and the troops in Iraq

The 80 minute second set was as brilliant as the first and again featured the remaining tracks from Day By Day with highlights being Do What Is Right with more wonderful digeridoo, the beautiful sensitive vocals on I Must Be Dreaming and the rocking You Can’t Hide with again an incredible harp solo.

One of only three covers featured the excellent guitar work of Tyler Mac on Don Nix’s Going Back To Iuka… “a little town that you’ve probably not heard of in the north east of Mississippi” – major surprise to hear that not only had everyone heard of the place due to the two visits to Worthenbury of Iuka residents Eddie and Frank Thomas, but that at least three people had visited the place!!

It was a great disappointment that such a superb night had to end but with the tracks Do Whatever You want To and the encore Down To The Rhythm, the title track from his previous Blind Pig release which again featured all the band members, the memorable night ended with Harper proclaiming that he would definitely return.

The audience in the packed little venue showed their appreciation at length at the finale and cleared him out of a stack of cds. Look out next year – a full UK tour is planned.

RIP: Jimmy “T-99″ Nelson

There is an unconfirmed story that Jimmy “T-99″ Nelson passed away yesterday.

I don’t think that I’ll be able to post more news on this as I am away for the next four days and the site will be on autopublish.

YouTube: Harman and Gene Taylor

After hearing the other week that Gene Taylor had left the Fabulous Thunderbirds to live in Belgium, I ran a YouTube search to see if there was any recent footage of Gene Taylor over here on our side of the pond.

What a bonus. Here is Gene Taylor with the fabulous James Harman and a great band who shall remain nameless – I’d love to know who the guitarist is. I wondered if it is Alex Schultz, but the film quality and the hat don’t help the identification. Anyway the band are fabulous. I would have loved to be at this gig. Amazing stuff! Parts one two and three.

There are some photos over that the organisers’ site.

I think that as time ticks away and a generation from now as we collectively review the bands and artists of the late 20th century then I am confident that James Harman will be recognised as the great singer and songwriter that he is (not forgetting his brilliant harp playing). I have recently been resampling his many recordings, I hadn’t listened to them in ages and I tell you what, they sound as good today as they did when I first heard Extra Napkins in Decoy records in Manchester and bought it on the spot.

YouTube: Alex Schultz in Organ Trio

Well you all know that Alex Schultz is one of my favourite modern guitar players. The man has class, bags of class, groove and chops to boot. I’d even bet that he’s a really top bloke. Anyway, here’s a recent clip (April 2007) of Alex in what looks like Italy. People who know me well will also know of my love of the Hammond sound so it’s hardly surprising that this one rings my bell.

He lives in Europe now, why has he not been to the UK – wait! – don’t bother answering that – I already know the answer.

Not blues but…

We all know that phishing is a growing problem in the modern Internet.  These days, fake sites look very realistic and anybody can be fooled into entering private, valuable and maybe costly information into a phishing site.

I just took the McAfee SiteAdvisor Phishing Quiz and I was amazed how accurate the fake sites were.

Look after yourself online.  You would not give out your credit card number to a stranger on the street so please don’t be tempted to do it online.

Be safe, take the test and always pay attention.

Etta James Hospitalised

http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSN2538796020070726

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Blues singer Etta James is in stable condition in a Los Angeles hospital, suffering from complications following abdominal surgery, her manager said on Wednesday.
The 69-year-old rock ‘n’ roll pioneer was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, following the mid-June surgery, Lupe De Leon wrote in an email to Reuters.
James hopes to be well enough by the end of August to join blues icon B.B. King and soul veteran Al Green on a tour that began in Florida on Tuesday.
“If it had been left solely up to her, she would have checked herself out of the hospital and started the tour regardless of her delicate health,” De Leon said. “However, her doctor advised that were she to do so, it would put her at very great risk.”
R&B singer Chaka Khan is substituting for James on the tour.
James helped pioneer rock ‘n’ roll in the mid-1950s with tunes such as “The Wallflower” and “Good Rockin’ Daddy.” She diversified into mainstream blues, soul and R&B during the 1960s, after signing with Chess Records. The three-time Grammy winner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and remains an active recording artist.

Review: Dave Gross – Take the gamble

Dave Gross – Take the gamble
SwingNation Records SNCD 388006

Photo1

When I read that Dave Gross was only 22 years old, my heart sank. I expected yet another plank spanking guitar hero. I did not expect a great-sounding CD filled with a balanced selection of blues, covering styles ranging from gypsy jazz influenced swing , through the swing groove of the 1940s right through classic shuffle grooves and country picking to modern soul and funk. That’s quite a lot of material for one short CD but the lofty aim is carried off pretty well.

For me the vocals are often the weakest point when young guys play the blues. It’s true that Dave Gross does not sing like Wynonie Harris or Ray Charles but he does deliver the songs adequately in a style that hides his tender years. His guitar playing is very good indeed and covers a number of tones. The secret to the excellence of the tones is given in the sleeve notes – the CD was recorded at Duke Robillard’s “Duke’s Mood Room” studio in Rhode Island and it seems that as well as some sound advice from Duke, Dave was given the run around of Duke’s guitar collection using desirable guitars such as several 1950’s Gibsons, Strats, Teles and an old Epiphone. The band along with the guest artists deserve a mention; the backing is excellent throughout. As a harmonica player I immediately recognised the guest spots by the excellent Dennis Gruenling – a man with unique tone.

The stand out songs for me are “After you’ve gone” with the band firmly in 1930’s swing mode, the Collins-esque funky groove of “That’s all you get” and the sweet slow blues of “Make things right”

This CD is a great romp through the blues genres. It’s great to see such a young man playing with chops, tone and taste. Very enjoyable indeed.

Dancing to the blues

One thing that I have noticed as a big difference between blues clubs in the US and the UK is the quantity and quality of the dancing. The clubs in the US seem to have the dance floor full all night and the ‘Merkins seem to have knowledge of how to actually dance to blues rather than just jiggling on the floor. Maybe this is because they are taught to dance for the American institution – the high school prom, I don’t know for sure.

Often in the UK the dancefloor remains half empty until the last song and the encore after which the dancers don’t want to go home. I noticed that in Texas it was the shuffles that filled the dancefloor whilst in the UK, the straighter, more rock and roll or soul beats are more popular.

One thing I have never seen anywhere is the performance of the Shim Sham, this should change. The world would be a better place with more Shim Shamming. Here’s a clip that demonstrates my point perfectly.

Shim Sham anyone?
