Gig: Rev Doc – Liverpool – this thursday

It’s all blues this week as The Harbourside feature Scottish talant Rev Doc and the Congregation for their second gig of the season.

The season started off in fine style with Hans Theessink last week. There were about 100 blues lovers, Hans sold 50 CDs and they raised £110 in the raffle for The Children’s Heart Association. Now if that isn’t success then nothing is.

John says that he know that it’s a short gap from the last gig to this one but he books the bands that he wants when they are touring.

Rev Doc is one of the genuine characters of the current British Blues scene. He is a charismatic frontman, who delivers raw vocals and harp, wrapped in a web of enigmatic humour. He is backed by a superb band that features the superlative guitar playing of Al Brown and the rock solid rhythm section of Davie B on drums and Alan Thompson on bass guitar.

The Glasgow-based outfit is hugely popular throughout the UK with a cult following of enthusiastic fans. Their Chicago-style blues programme is a delight, combining well-loved standards with cleverly-penned originals. Once seen, Rev Doc and The Congregation are an addictive force and never fail to satisfy the high expectation that they provoke. So, if you think you’re hard enough, come and get some – but prepare to be hooked.

Liverpool Marina is situated at Coburg Wharf, Sefton Street, Liverpool L3 4BP.
Tickets for the concert (£10 each) are obtainable from John Welsh on 0151 428 2855 or by email to johnswelsh@hotmail.com

Darth Blues

This made me smile. I’ve never seen any of the Star Wars films (I am an outcast and freak in the IT company for whom I work) but I do recognise some of the characters.

Nice use of the fabulous Sonny Terry.

There’s the traditional PDF

There’s a double page JPG

There is a single page JPG

I’m a chemist by trade; a life in analytical laboratories and laboratory informatics does not really give you great design skills.  If there are any talented people out there who would like to assist in flyer, banner or button design then please give me a shout.

How you can help bluesinthenorthwest.com

Nope! I’m not asking for money; I love my blues so much that I am paying good money to host this site free of charge, as a service to the blues community in the north west.

Here’s what you can do to help. This site needs more users, this site needs more feedback. Write a comment on a post, email me your opinions; better still, print out some flyers from here and take them to your next gig. Let me know what you like and what you don’t, write a review, take some pictures — promote the community.

How easy is that? You can help me by joining and promoting the on-line blues community here in the north west. I know that there are many more fans out there than I see at the site. Let’s make it happen. Without your support, this site will fade and die.

Hey, hey..

WALTER TROUT
‘Full Circle Tour’
Plus support

Guitarist/vocalist WALTER TROUT kicked off his FULL CIRCLE 2007 WORLD TOUR in May with major festival appearances in the U.S. and Europe throughout the summer. His first new studio work in five years, FULL CIRCLE (Ruf Records) was named “2006 CD Of The Year” by Blueswax magazine. Walter appears as a guest guitarist on the upcoming Jeff Beck tribute album Freeway Jam – To Beck and Back (Tone Center/July 17, 2007). Other guitarists on the Beck tribute disc include Steve Morse, John Scofield, Eric Johnson, Mike Stern, Warren Haynes and Chris Duarte.

FULL CIRCLE is a celebration of the diverse styles within the blues genre, an inspired journey of musical magic by master musicians creating “on the spot” compositions in the studio. No studio gimmickry, just “one-take” performances that demonstrate Walter Trout’s appreciation and utter mastery of all shades of the blues.

Walter Trout demonstrates his passion for music is just as great today as it was when he started his career as a teenager more than 35 years ago. He considers the new album a tribute to the people and the times that have helped shape his musical career, demonstrating how the many styles within the blues genre can co-exist and mutually enhance each other without fight for rank or authenticity. It’s always been Trout’s dream to break down the barriers between the labels, which get attached to musical genres and show what you call music is not important. Ultimately what the music makes one feel is the only thing that matters to Walter Trout.

Don’t miss your chance to catch Walter’s blistering live show!

Gary Primich Tributes

Nothing but sadness, praise and fond memories on the two mailing lists that I subscribe to Blues-L and Harp-L. I sit here back home after my long journey listening to Gary’s songs shedding a small tear with the news finally sinking in.

Some obits and tributes have started to appear and I will try to feature as many as I can for this giant of a bluesman who died suddenly at only 49.

I remember the first Gary Primich CD that I bought. Travelling Mood in 1994. I got a recommendation from someone, who I can’t remember, if it was you then I apologise. for forgetting and I say thanks.

On hearing the CD I was immediately blown away by the strength and diversity of the playing. It is still one of my favourite CDs that have blues harmonica featured. For me Gary had many strengths; I love his jazzy shuffle playing – the head and the solo on “School of Hard Knocks” is outstanding. I love his amazing solo on “Dummy on your Knee” it is a masterpiece on hand shaping and absolute intensity, he really felt that – you can tell. Her also recorded many classic 2nd position fast shuffle instrumentals each one a classic. His 3rd position playing was also amazing “What’s it gonna be” is a great example of this.

Acoustically he recorded great tunes too check out “Feel like going home” simple, beautiful and incredibly difficult to play anything like Gary managed.

Check out this amazing playing and go out and buy his CDs

ain’t you trouble

feel like going home

I based a lot of my own style on Gary Primich’s ideas – I came nowhere close; I didn’t finish up in the same county let alone ball park but I owe him a huge dept of gratitude.

RIP Gary Primich 1958 – 2007.

Gary Primich RIP

As mentioned in the comments section by Jonny Gary Primich has indeed passed away.  For me Gary was one of the best harminica players of his generation.  He had a very unique tone and phrasing, I learned a huge amount from Gary and I own all his CDs.  Today is a sad day for all blues harmonica lovers.  Here’s the press release from his website.

Gary Primich, considered by many to be one of the
greatest harmonica players in the world, passed away
suddenly on September 23rd. Not only is this the loss
of a world-class talent, but also of a true
world-class person. Offstage, Gary was a caring and
gentle soul — a real Regular Joe of the best kind.
Onstage he played with a ferocity and indescribable
sound that was often mind-blowing. He’d say Thank You
to his fans then quickly change the subject because he
didn’t want it to be all about him. He loved animals,
he loved people, he loved music and he loved life.
Gary’s career sent him around the world, traveling
thousands and thousands of miles for his love of
music, but he’ll always be right here, in our hearts.
Details regarding a memorial service for Gary will be
posted as soon as more information is available.

There is already a lovery tribute on Mr G’s blog.

RIP Gary.  I’ll miss you.

Happy Birthday bluesinthenorthwest.com

I am wishing a happy birthday to bluesinthenorthwest.com and all our readers.

Today we are two years old. The first post made to bluesinthenorthwest.com was on 24 Sept 2005. Back in those days the site was hosted on the old blogspot site before being migrated over to the fancy new fangled wordpress site about one year later.

We are still running on the Wordpress site hosted by Yetihost using a modified K2 template to provide 3 columns of bluesy goodness.

To celebrate our birthday why don’t you take the time to browse our archive feature and send me your favourite bluesinthenorthwest.com posting as a comment.

I really like the sounds category – especially those little snippets of bluesy funky stuff like this one, this one and this one.

I also like the little music tools and games like this one, this one and this one.

YouTube: The Dap Kings

There is a fabulous stable of talent at Daptone records in Brooklyn, New York. The cornerstone of this label are The Dap Kings. Here’s what the Daptone website says about The Dap Kings.

The Dap-Kings are the backing band for Sharon Jones, as well as the mighty house-band of Daptone records, today’s premier source of real Funk & Soul. Led by bassist and producer Bosco Mann, the dapper eight-piece Dap-Kings–horns, guitars, congas and drum kit–always lay down a gritty groove. From meaty breakbeats and jams that echo the best of the JBs to beautiful ballads that would make Aretha smile, the veteran Dap-Kings know how to sweat and deliver. DJs, hip-hop producers and thousands of fans worldwide have taken notice. Give a listen. So will you.

When TheDap-Kings are not on the road or in the studio, they stay busy filling out the ranks of such esteemed acts as the Sugarman Three, the Mighty Imperials, , Dirt Rifle and the Bullets, the Budos, and the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra.

As ever the upcoming European tour of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings seems to go everywhere but the UK – Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland *sigh*.

So for all of us who will not get chance to see the band live……..

Dap Kings – Casella Walk

Binky Griptite and the Dee Kays – Super Good

Sharon Jones and the Dap KIngs – Things got to get better

There is a Daptone photo pool over at Flickr to see pictures of the bands in action.
