I have been contacted by Carlisle based bluesman Chris James.
Chris is looking to promote himself and has sensibly chosen to create a Myspace page and to upload to YouTube.

http://www.myspace.com/chrisjamesblues
I could not find any gis listings for Chris so I cannot point you in the direction of any live shows. The videos are very good though. I could’t help but notice the lack of a Cumbrian accent but I’m not holiding that against Chris. We are more than happy to accept talented people from the South.
It is also worth following the links from Chris’ site to hear his talented daughter Laura James.
There is a change on December 15th to the Worthenbury line-up.
Roland Chadwick will not be appearing. Instead Harry Skinner and Dave Saunders have been booked. These guys are two of the original members of the top UK band, The Producers who still have a great local following.
This wasn’t Italian singer/guitarist Robi Zonca’s first visit to Warrington. His first appearance, together with fellow guitarist, Stefano Galli, was as an acoustic support act to Memo Gonzalez in 2006. Such was their impact then that they were invited back to the club with their full band. The line-up on this occasion was completed by a top notch rhythm section.
The vast majority of the numbers performed comprised original material, starting with the medium-paced shuffle “New York City Blues” and the upbeat and funky “Nothing”, with Robi on husky vocals and lead guitar. On the country ballad, “My Baby She’s Gone”, and the lively boogie, “Just A Little Bit”, Stefano Galli took over lead guitar duties, offering a gentler alternative to Zonca’s spiky approach. “Hey Man”, a bluesy ballad written jointly by the two guitarists, led into the first cover of the evening – a bouncy rockabilly treatment of “Got My Mojo Working”. The lively rocker, “Night Time” featured some lovely interplay between Robi and Stefano and some tasty phrasing from the engine room. The first set was completed with the slow and funky “Never Lie”, complete with a splendid guitar solo from Zonca.
The second set opened with “Rebel”, another brilliantly performed funky blues and the title track of the band’s latest album. There followed a wonderful miscellany of blues-oriented, if not strictly blues, numbers. There was a terrific version of Stevie Winwood’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” and a rousing, original instrumental, “Brown Panther”, on which both guitarists excelled and the rhythm section was impressively tight. After “Kansas City”, there was a fine delivery of Cream’s Brit rock classic, “Sunshine Of Your Love” and the subsequent number in similar vein was concluded with a diversion into The Who’s “My Generation”. A final shuffle, by way of an encore, brought the excellent show to an end.
Apart from the high standard of the lead vocals and instrumental artistry, special mention must be made of the superior quality of the backing harmonies provided by Stefano Galli and the drummer – far higher than the average. On the downside, following the two encouragingly large attendances at the two previous gigs at Warrington, the small turnout was particularly disappointing. However, when news of the band’s highly entertaining performance spreads, it is very likely that a return visit would attract a considerably fuller house. It would certainly be merited.

THE CADILLAC KINGS
The Ironworks, Oswestry: 26/10/07
The UK’s premier purveyors of blues and swing, The Cadillac Kings, delivered their customary storming live show at the splendid new venue in Oswestry, The Ironworks – a great room, with excellent sound and viewing all around!
The core of the band – Mike Thomas (vocals and guitar), Gary Potts (harmonica and vocals), Mike Adcock (piano and accordion) and Roy Webber (drums) – were augmented by the depping madcap Geordie, Pete O’Brien on the stand-up bass, and great London-based Kiwi guitarist, Paul Garner.
Catching up with the band after some 12 months, they sounded as good as ever, with the two new boys and a good sprinkling of new songs, destined for a soon-to-be recorded third album, livening up the show – with an appreciative audience dancing from the first number!
The boys were down to business with the rollicking “Bombshell Blonde”, featuring great harp from Gary Potts and Mike Thomas’s slashing slide guitar; and the equally raucous “Shim Sham Shimmy” – a great r&b swing tune.
Other first set treats were James Harman’s “Stranger Blues” and the new “Mr Nip & Tuck” – featuring some of Mike Thomas’s finest wry lyrics about the perils of plastic surgery! The band have not always taken themselves too seriously on stage, but with Pete O’Brien aboard he takes the fun to a new level – from his manic grimaces to his antics with his double bass – great stuff!
The second set included more new tunes – including the Lazy Lester-style “Trouble In Store; the Hooker-boogie of “Chain Gang Boogie”; and the Louisiana-flavoured “Less Is More” – one of a few songs featuring some great Mike Adcock accordion.
The band always seem to be able to find fantastic lead guitarists, and young Paul Garner is no exception – some truly marvellous Hollywood Fats/Junior Watson style solos, and great rhythm work – a great find for the band!
A top night was rounded off with the hilarious “Who’s Been Lickin’ My Chicken?” – as ever dedicated to Bernard Matthews – from the “Highway 17″ release – sending a primarily non-blues audience home very happy indeed! A great night from a lovely bunch of guys – and definitely one of our finest live blues bands – long may they prosper!

Last night I popped down to the Ironworks in Oswestry to see the brilliant Cadillac Kings. Not much of a review from me as Grahame will be doing a proper write up. Ahead of Grahame’s review I will say that the band certainly did not disappoint, another excellent show that won over in short order the slightly thin crowd. A handful of new songs and a brace of new members keeps the Cadillacs on the top of the pile of UK blues bands. Finally, what a great venue the Ironworks is. A great room, great sound, great visibility, good lighting. Even the beer was half decent. Here’s a picture, I didn’t take many as the dancefloor was well and truly full all night and I did not want to get trampled.
All the pictures can be seen in the bluesinthenorthwest.com photo archive.
This week’s Blueswax features amongst many other things an interview with Omar Kent Dykes mainly concentrating on the new CD “On The Jimmy Reed Highway”.
There is also a really sweet short trailer interview with Omar and Jimmie Vaughan on PBS at this link.
I have been contacted by local blues musician Jonathan Armstrong from Blackburn; Jonathan is looking for some help from northwest bands and venues. He says….
My name is Jonathan Armstrong, I’m a bass player and huge blues fan. I lived in Indonesia for 7 years from 1999 – 2006. During this time i was in a blues band called the blues bug. We were a 3 piece band and used to play regularly at bars and clubs in Jakarta.
Now back in the UK, i’m desperately trying to arrange a work permit for the lead guitarist of the band (Gugun) to visit the UK and tour with me and my mate Tom (the drummer) between 10th of December 2007 and 10th January 2008.
The reason i have contacted you is because I am based in the North West (Blackburn) and am desperately trying to arrange venues for our tour and was wondering if you might be able to point me in the right direction. You see, in order to apply for a work permit for Gugun to visit the UK, we need to submit evidence of venue bookings and as I am trying to arrange the tour for December, the time is running out for me to book gigs!!
Gugun is an established blues artist in Indonesia and has released 4 albums to date his latest of which is currently on i-tunes and can be accessed via the following link:
He has also taken part in a number of world class music festivals. I would encourage you to view the bands website at: www.thebluesbug.com to see footage of his live performances.
On viewing the performances, if anyone in the region would like to offer help to the band then please drop a line to bluesinthenorthwest.com at nwblues@gmail.com and I will put you in touch with the band. The band appear to be right up the street of many bluesinthenorthwest.com readers.
If anyone (like me) missed the excellent session from Jon Cleary on this week’s Paul Jones show on BBC Radio 2 then you need to listen again.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?radio2/paul_jones
I am very proud of Jon Cleary. He’s a Brit of course, but he makes his living in New Orleans. Man, you have to be good to move to the U.S. and beat the ‘merkins at their own game. I love his musical melting pot of styles, great stuff. Shame he didn’t get to the north on his recent tour.
There are also a few great YouTubes for your delight.
