“Gotta Get The Feeling Back Again”
(Dr. Sam Records – Interactive CD)

Cincinnatti-born, Nashville-based bluesman Stacy Mitchhart delivers a heady brew of funky soul-based blues on this, his ninth release on his own Dr. Sam Records – with a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure.

Mitchhart grew up in a musical family and has absorbed many influences, including those of his favourites, such as BB King, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland and Albert Collins, and also possesses, a fine, rich voice – and since relocating to Nashville in 1996 has took up several residencies with his band, including at BB King’s Club.

The eleven audio tracks kick off with the funky groove of the title cut, “Gotta Get The Feeling Back Again”, and in a similar vein, the soulful “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Lovin” – think Stevie Wonder’s “Living For The City”, and you’re close to how this one sounds.

He is also no mean slide player, with the electric playing on the instrumental “Blow On ‘Em Baby” being very appealing – but it is his spin on a couple of Led Zeppelin tunes, “Black Dog”/”Whole Lotta Love”, that may surprise people – taking them back to a stripped down acoustic Delta-blues sound, with just his Dobro and drums – very nice indeed!

The rest of the album is in a mostly laid-back soul/blues feel, with some nice ‘King’ influenced licks on “The Blues Has Got You Bad” and the great “I’ll Play The Blues For You” – forever associated with the late, great Albert King, whom Mitchhart is a great fan of, and usually a show-closer for him.

His big band, complete with fine horn section, are very tight and I would imagine are a blast live – complete with fine backing vocals throughout the release.

The album’s last two tracks are both worthy of mention as well – The Allman Brothers epic “Whipping Post” is again stripped down and no worse off for it; with the slow blues of “Blue Monday” rounding things off – taken from his live concert DVD.

An excellent interactive portion of the cd features some footage of the recording of “Black Dog”/”Whole Lotta Love”, together with pictures, audio and various links.
