Website upgrade

Posted on: Sunday, Nov 25, 2007

Hello dear readers.

I fear that in the next weeks (maybe in the Christmas holidays) I need to upgrade the site to the latest version of the WordPress software. Although I work in IT for my day job, the truth is that I am woefully bad at technical stuff. The last time I upgraded the site it was down for a number of days, hence my reluctance to move forward. But, an upgrade will provide more security and the site after the upgrade will be less at risk from hackers.

I have considered upgrading the look and feel of the site at the same time as upgrading the nuts and bolts, but on this matter I am undecided. My research last weekend presented a few option for the look of the site. My question is, does anyone have any strong preference for either of the following themes.

Illacrimo – click the link then select Illacrimo from the very top of the screen.

I really like the look and style of Mimbo but alas, I feel that I do not have the style nor the content to do justice to a magazine type layout.

So I think that it’s down to good old K2 (the current theme), Illacrimo or Silhouette.

Any preference?

Ken, I’m a firm believer in ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. The present format works well and the options offered don’t seem to be significantly better. I wish I could help but my computing knowledge is really basic. If there is anything you feel I could do, please ask.

Tend to agree with you Li although similarly I’m not sufficiently qualified or competent to comment.

Indeed – I do agree with the leave it alone principle but security and bug fixing drive the process.

I pay for the hosting where the software and the database reside, but the site itself is based on free software called wordpress, the look and feel of a wordpress site is controlled by the theme. So far the clever guy who wrote the three column version of the theme has not updated it to the latest version of WordPress. So I am in the pickle of wanting to upgrade the base software but I may be forced to change the theme.

I don’t want to go back to the old two column days. I like having all three of the current columns.
