Gig: Michael Messer – Worthenbury – 18 Jan

 MICHAEL MESSER & ED GENIS

WORTHENBURY VILLAGE HALL

Jan 18th

Michael Messer is without doubt our finest slide guitarist – “one of the greatest guitarists ever who ranks alongside Duanne Allman and Ry Cooder” quotes US magazine Spirit. “Don’t squeeze the trigger if you can’t stand the recoil – what I hear is the real thing – bare-bones blues, gut-bucket rock” wrote the legendary Johnny Cash on the sleeve notes of Messer’s ’93 cd Rhythm Oil. In May ’01, his cd King Guitar reached no 1 in Living Blues magazine in the USA and was the most played cd on the US college circuit in that month. We needn’t say much more. Accompanying Michael is his long time partner Ed Genis on rhythm guitar a very fine guitarist in his own right. This will be a memorable night and we recommend early reservation of tickets.

Gig: Kent DuChaine – Liverpool – 17 Jan

Kent DuChaine
At The Harbourside Club. Liverpool Marina
Thursday, 17th January 2008

(Doors open: 8pm/show starts 8.45pm)

Kent DuChaine is a troubadour of the highest quality, preserving the itinerant lifestyle of his idols. Playing bottleneck on his 1934 National Steel guitar, the Minnesota bluesman has a startling mastery of that intricate art form. In performance, he weaves a fascinating story of his musical development, liberally sprinkled with anecdotes of his meeting and performing with some of the legends of the US blues scene.

His choice of songs underline his love and respect for his musical heritage. The music of Bukka White, Willie Dixon and Elmore James are intermingled with classical compositions by his spiritual mentor, Robert Johnson, and a generous helping of self-penned material.

Kent’s energetic performances are always highly entertaining and delivered in a friendly, laid-back manner. His increasingly frequent tours are testimony to his popularity among the blues enthusiasts in the UK.

Liverpool Marina is situated at Coburg Wharf, Sefton Street, Liverpool L3BP.
Tickets for the concert (£10 each) are obtainable from John Welsh on 0151 428 2855 or by email to johnswelsh@hotmail.com

Best of the year

It’s normally around this time that the various media of the world: TV, radio, newspapers, magazine and regional niche websites, chose their best of the year.

I will start the ball rolling with my choices. 2007 for me was not a particularly prolific year, I didn’t go to that many gigs and I didn’t purchase many CDs. I still love my music but I found my focus to be elsewhere, this year I have heavily been into podcasts.

I am a big fan of the radio, especially BBC Radio 4; I work hard and travel a lot and I found that the BBC decision to make some of the best Radio 4 programmes available as podcasts to be real blessing. Most of the time I prefer to listen to spoken word rather than music.

Favourite gig: Memo Gonzalez at Warrington. I have publically stated many times how much I love this band and their September show was a killer. Have a look through the bluesinthenorthwest.com archives for September.

http://www.bluesinthenorthwest.com/index.php/2007/09/

Favourite CD: As already mentioned I don’t really have a favourite from this year. What I have done is to take a look at iTunes and mention some of the CDs and artists who have had more playtime than the others. A selection of tunes from my Top25 Most Played.

Top Blues Tunes

“I still love you baby” – Lowell Fulson – for me the most played song of the year.

“Reconsider Baby” – Lowell Fulson – Number three in my most played list.

Rick Holmstrom did well with “Descanso” from Late in the Night.

Frank Goldwassser had a lot of plays with his CD Bluju. The standout for me was the killer instrumental “Bluju” and the lovely story “Three Sisters“.

Non Blues

About half of the songs and albums played most on my MP3 this year were non-blues. There are two CDs that stand out as the most played non-blues of the year.

Here and Now – Gospel of Free Love. A mish-mash selection highly improvised hippie/punk space rock recorded at various squats and free gigs in the 1970s. You can read more about Here and Now at this site. If you want to hear a sample then here you go. Please don’t complain.

The Thievery Corporation – The Outernational Sound. A brilliant compilation of an ecletic mixture of sounds from around the world. I think that the Wikipedia article sums them up better than I ever could.

Thievery Corporation is a Washington, D.C.-based production and DJ duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton and their supporting artists. Their music style is dub, acid jazz, Indian classical and Brazilian (such as bossa nova) fused together with a lounge aesthetic

All bluesinthenorthwest.com readers should check out the tunes from this compilation…

Big Boss Man – Sea Groove (sorry – you’ll have to search for your own samples)

and

Breakestra – Cramp Your Style (ace reworking of a classic funk tune ALL THE PEOPLE/DENNIS COFFEY – Cramp Your Style)

**Thievery Stop Press** – The front page of the Thievery Corporation website has a link to a 30 mins DJ mix recorded for the BBC.

Spoken Word: As well as the many fabulous BBC podcasts already mentioned, this year I have been developing my Spanish and have listed to a few Spanish language resources to assist in the all so important (and very difficult) comprehension. Man, do those folks speak quickly.

RIP in 2007: I was very saddened by the premature loss of Gary Primich this year. Such a great player, such an influence.

Over to you: What did everyone else like……?

Sweet.

The other Christmas song that they posted was a version of the Charles Brown Christmas classic, Merry Christmas Baby. Featuring the Jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby (no not that kind of harp).

Review: The Stumble at Fogherty’s, Liverpool – 15 Dec 07

After two highly acclaimed appearances at the Harbourside Club, it was no surprise that The Stumble would be the first act to grace the stage of Fogherty’s for John and Lorraine Welsh’s first blues gig at that venue. Furthermore, it was no surprise that the band delivered another stunning performance.

The band opened with five numbers in acoustic mode that included “Ain’t No Sunshine” and the Sam Cooke classic, “Good News”. After a short interlude, they resumed with the first of two full-blown sets. A typically eclectic programme contained brilliant versions of “Ain’t Nobody’s Business”, complete with superb solos from Simon Anthony on sax and Colin Black on guitar, the slow, Latin-rhythmed “Sit Right Here” and the fast-driving “Back To Louisiana”. The set ended with the upbeat shuffle, “Small World, Baby” and a foot-tapping slice of unadulterated rock and roll.

“Meet Me At The Bottom” provided a rousing start to the final set, which was contrasted with the medium-paced shuffle, “Be My Baby” and “Leading Me On”. The momentum was raised with “The Kind Of Girl”, which revealed guitarist Colin Black’s versatility as he demonstrated his considerable proficiency on harp. But the climax of the set was provided by the slow blues, “All Over Again”, which showcased Paul Melville’s superlative vocals and delivered more artistry from Black and Anthony. The encore, Hound Dog Taylor’s “Gimme Back My Wig”, which was loudly demanded by the full-house audience, afforded the excellent rhythm guitarist, Jonny Spencer, the opportunity to strut his stuff on slide guitar, brilliantly backed by drummer, Boyd Tonner, and Dave Heath on bass guitar.

This was a wonderful way to sign off a fabulous year of top class blues music in Liverpool. It confirmed the increasing recognition that The Stumble is now as good as any blues band in the UK and boasts a fan-base that is expanding exponentially. If you haven’t yet had the good fortune to enjoy one of their live performances, deny yourself no longer and put that pleasure on the top of your list of New Year resolutions.
