Sorry for the lack of postings

I’ve been in Spain again this week and never really got around to doing any serious posting during the day. I was working pretty late then in the evenings I never signed up for the hotel internet service at all because…

1. I had been sitting in front of a screen enough all day

2. It was a bit too expensive, despite that fact that I could have claimed on expenses

3. Madrid was all around me and all outside my hotel. I felt obliged to take walks and try some of the 1000s of tapas bars.

Madrid 008

I got back last night and will be working on my inbox over the weekend.

Hasta pronto

Always loved this slab of New Orleans, RnB/RnR. Pity it’s just a video not a live clip.

Review: John-Alex Mason – Town and Country

JOHN-ALEX MASON
“Town And Country”
(NJBM-006)

The latest release from the Colorado-raised John-Alex Mason supplies an engaging mix of Delta blues and his own compositions, which touch on many bases, including his love of the North Mississippi hill blues – neatly divided into the electric “Town” half, complete with foot drums, and the more acoustic, rootsy “Country” section, featuring his resonator guitar.

Mason’s path to the blues was initially shaped by the classic album, Muddy Waters “Hard Again”, and when working as a military contractor in Europe, he took to busking in Germany, France and Holland – which was pivotal in the one-man-band element in his music.

I was immediately taken with his great voice – with its smoky tones seeming to come from way back – although it may not be to everyone’s taste! His guitar playing, however, is most appealing – with his electric work having a real chunky tone, especially the four-string Lowebox cigar box guitar.

A generous fifteen tracks are ‘bookended’ by the Delta classic, “Shake ‘Em On Down” – interestingly with the electric version before the acoustic tracks, and vice-versa. Amongst the other covers are songs by masters such as Robert Johnson and Charley Patton, “Terraplane Blues” and “Boll Weevil” respectively; and a splendid “Jitterbug Swing” – with the four-string guitar laying down a great groove.

Amongst his own compositions are his modern response to Charley Patton’s “Pony Blues” – “Steel Pony Blues”, and his post-Katrina song for New Orleans, “Chef Menteur” – very nice indeed.

The one-man band rig kicks up a storm on the old chestnut, “Shake Your Moneymaker”, with the Skip James tune, “Cypress Grove” getting the same treatment – indeed, this is one Mason’s favourite songs to perform in this mode.

A new name to me, and one I would thoroughly recommend to all – especially for fans of the Fat Possum musicians, and established UK visitors such as Kent DuChaine and Catfish Keith – check it out!

There is a lot of music in Southport this winter and spring.

Check out www.seftonarts.co.uk for details. There are too many events for me to post a single entry so I have created a PDF file of the bluesy Southport events that you can download from here.

Review: The John O’Leary Band at The Harbourside Club, Liverpool – 21 February 2008

A faulty alternator caused the John O’Leary Band to arrive late at The Harbourside Club, which denied them the luxury of a relaxed set-up and sound check. Great credit is owed to the band that their stressful dilemma had no apparent effect on them as they immediately settled to their task and stamped their authority on the evening right from the outset.

The programme was opened, minus John O’Leary, with a jazzy, funk-edged instrumental. The singer/harmonica player then entered the fray on “Born In Chicago” and Junior Wells’s “Snatch It Back And Hold It”. They were followed by two slow blues – “Early In The Morning” and “Drifting Blues”. The former featured wonderful solos on harp, keys (from Jools Grudgings) and guitar (from Jules Fothergill) before a relentless crescendo that culminated in some frantic drumming from Joachim Greve. Jools Grudgings then delivered a fabulous boogie-woogie number before the set was concluded with “Little By Little”.

The second set started with “Yonder’s Wall” that drifted effortlessly into “Help Me” and “One Way Out”. There followed a stream of delight that included Jules Fothergill on lead vocals on one number and a fabulous version of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Who’s Been Talkin’”, which featured some lovely harp from O’Leary and an incredible solo by Roger Innis on his six-stringed bass guitar. On “Black Cat Bone”, Innis was again in prominence, this time sharing the limelight in a vibrant duet with Joachim Greve that, whilst entertaining, was perhaps a shade too long. Very appropriately, “Pink Champagne” completed what was a truly vintage performance.

The John O’Leary Band is a match for any British blues band on the current scene and simply oozes quality. The mellow tone of John O’Leary’s harmonica and the superlative virtuosity of Jules Fothergill and Jools Grudgings are brilliantly underpinned and considerably enhanced by the rhythm section from heaven. The suitably large audience was understandably knocked out by the performance – for the second year running. It is my wild guess that a third appearance next year is a distinct possibility.

YouTube: Rolling Stone’s Greatest Songs

McGuffin87 says…

In 2005 German Rolling Stone Magazine published a list of the 500 best songs of all time. Here’s the Top 100.

To play them all would take over six hours, so I’ve decided to play only the title (wherever it is possible).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEp-eG6GLwg

Any list of this type, of course, is pure bobbins and complete nonsense. Who could ever say what the greatest 100 of anything are. However, it’s great to see so many Brits in the list. For a small country tucked on the edge of Europe we don’t half punch above our weight when it comes to the invention and re-invention of rock and roll.

The legendary composer, bandleader and trumpeter Calvin Owens passed away today in Houston.  He was probably best known for his time as bandleader for B.B. King.  He was 78.
