Dave Sawyer writes to let us all know that the Blues night this week on 03 July with Atlanta Roots and Johny Hewitt and Tommy Allen has sold out. The venue only has a capacity of 100 and all these tickets have gone.
If you were thinking about going it’s too late. Tough! – Dave didn’t say that. I did.
I have just returned from an excellent day at Worthenbury Blues and Roots Festival 2008. Like usual I will save the proper review for Lionel and Grahame and the proper photos to Ian, however I will say what a terrific night was had by all. Although chilly in the evening, the weather held and we even had some lovely sunny intervals.
I enjoyed all the bands and it was great to see some familar faces from festivals and gigs gone by. It was also great to meet a whole load of new faces – all of whom I look forward to meeting again.
As well as some great blues some money was raised for charity by festival organiser Pete Evans who raised over £500 for Diabetes UK by shaving off a dodgy moustache that he has been sporting for 37 years. I took a couple of before and after pictures…..
Before Plassey Ale and razor
After Plassey Ale and razor.
Everyone thinks that it’s an improvement. Even my wife commented this morning “under that ‘tache he’s not a bad looking fellow for an old guy”
All my Flickr photos that I am not too ashamed of are uploaded to Flickr.
The beautiful and extremely talented songstress Janiva Magness makes a follow up appearance on The Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. The concert, like usual, is available in lofi audio, hifi audio and windows media streaming and downloadable video.
You can grab this little treat by navigating to the Woodsongs archive site and looking for show 484.
I’m off to Wortehnbury today. I have my camera so will post a few piccies and maybe a YouTube when I return. In addition I also have my smartphone that I have set up to moblog, so I can post to bluesinthenorthwest.com live from the festival.
Modern technology is great but if I recall there is no mobile phone signal in Worthenbury.

Rocky Athas
at the Liverpool Marina
Thursday 17th July 2008 (doors at 8pm, show starts at 8.45pm)
Texan guitar-slinger Rocky Athas returns for his third visit to the Liverpool Marina. On this occasion, his masterful guitar playing will be complemented by his original band, Lightning, which in the late ’70s and early ’80s was one of the biggest draws in Texas nightclub history. Their music encompasses a broad range of blues music, including powerful blues rock.
Rocky grew up playing guitar with his pal Stevie Ray Vaughan. By the age of 23, he was honoured as one of the ten best guitarists in Texas by Buddy Magazine’s Texas Tornadoes. SRV received his induction two years later. They hold this honour with such noted guitarists as ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Johnny Winter and Jimmie Vaughan. In recent years, Rocky has recorded a number of highly acclaimed albums on the British-based Armadillo Music label, the latest being Lightning Strikes Twice with Lightning.
Liverpool Marina is situated at Coburg Wharf, Sefton Street, Liverpool L3 4BP.
Tickets for the concert (£10 each in advance and £11 on the door) are obtainable from John Welsh on 0151 428 2855 or by email: johnswlesh@hotmail.com.

LESTER BUTLER FEATURING ‘13′ – LIVE AT MOULIN BLUES 1998
That’s the title of the first-ever release of Lester Butler concert footage on DVD. This is not just some concert, but the last gig Lester ever did.
On May 2, 1998, Lester Butler and his band ‘13′ were the headliners of the 13th (!) edition of the Moulin Blues Festival in The Netherlands. It was an intense show, resulting in a jam session with fellow musicians like James Harman, Paul Size and Joe Louis Walker. When he walked off stage after more than 2 hours, no one could have suspected that it had been his last show ever. One week later, on May 9, Lester died tragically.
He left a deep impression with many people, and he was -and still is- an example and source of inspiration for many musicians.
For all these people and as a tribute to Lester, exactly 10 years later we present this concert registration on DVD, supplemented with some private footage and 3 tracks from his gig with former band The Red Devils at Moulin Blues 1993!
Although these recordings were never made with the intention of publication, we believe that, by releasing this DVD, we respectfully pay homage to Lester and his music. We hope that many people will enjoy it.

Here’s a recent post made to the Blues-L mailing list by Chuck Nevitt. I thought that his interesting take of blues releted clips made very good watching….
Across The Street From The Blues
Syl Johnson -- Is one of the great under-rated singers. Here he is,
displaying chops right out of the Al Green school of soul.

Little Junior Parker -- Long a favorite of blues fans, late in his career
Parker showed he wasn't about to stay stuck in the 50s. Financially, that
probably wasn't the smartest move he made, because he was essentially cut
out of the blues scene because his style had changed. This song is from an
obscure album that also had 3 Beatler cover tunes on it.

Rusty Zinn - Rusty not only knows his way around the blues, but here he
shows that he's a helluva reggae musician, making Frankie Valli's "Can't
Take My Eyes Off Of You" sound like it's straight on the island.

Sean Costello -- Speaking of Al Green, here is a clip of with Sean and his
band performing Al's great tune, "I'm A Ram."

John Lee Hooker -- Hooker hooks up with Carlos Santana. Carlos started out
playing the blues in the 60s, and I don't know that Hooker ever played much
Santana music, but despite what some might doubts about, the two of them
sound good together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43yvS6bPZDs
Matt Taylor has two shows in the bluesinthenorthwest.com region as an acoustic duo with Jonny Dyke. Both dates are in The Living Room bars of the cities.
Tues 8th July – The Living Room, Manchester
Weds 9th July – The Living Room, Liverpool
