Gig: Martin Stephenson – Blackpool – 01 Aug

On Friday August 1st the maverick talent that is Martin Stephenson will be appearing at The Lawrence house Studio of The Grand Theatre, Blackpool as part of the “Studio Blues” season

Martin Stephenson is a supremely gifted singer, songwriter, musician and performer, whose career in music stretches back over twenty years. Born in County Durham, in the North-East of England, on the 27th. July 1961, Martin was initially fired up to play in a band when the Punk Rock phenomenon went overground in the late 1970’s. Then, as now, however, Martin’s free spirit incorporated a love for an eclectic range of musical styles, from Rockabilly, show tunes, through to straight ahead rock and full-tilt Punk.

He convened The Daintees in the early 80’s, the name deliberately chosen as a response to the humourlessness and angst of much of the music of the time. The Daintees became one of the first bands to sign with the Newcastle-upon-Tyne based independent label, Kitchenware, and their debut single, “Roll On Summertime” was a sparkling, cheerful item that announced the arrival of a considerable new talent.

After Kitchenware packed Martin to London Records, he released the marvellous debut album, “Boat To Bolivia” (1985) with The Daintees, under the Production auspices of future Pixies/Bunnymen/James sound man Gil Norton. The album positively burst with excellent, rootsy pop songs, boasting a veritable rainbow of styles, sung and played with a youthful enthusiasm and warmth that paradoxically, perhaps, displayed a mature, unique Songwriting voice. Songs such as the bittersweet “Crocodile Cryer”, the alcoholic’s lament “Little Red Bottle”, the emphatic “Running Waters” and the haunting ballad “Rain” further underscored the impression that “Roll On Summertime” had made. Lengthy bouts of touring saw Stephenson and the band taking his music to the people, and they loved it, carving an awesome reputation as a live act.

Subsequent albums, “Gladsome, Humour, and Blue” (1987), “Salutation Road” (1989), “The Boy’s Heart” (1992) however, failed to distil the essence of Stephenson’s muse quite so effectively. London’s quest for a hit single ran converse to Stephenson’s desire to make a purer, more heartfelt music, although all said albums had their moments.

Martin’s instinct to kick against the label’s constraints saw him undertake tours of highland Folk clubs and tiny bars.

Martin left London in 1993, and also severed his ties with the Kitchenware management team. He signed to the West London based indie Demon Records, for whom he made three, highly acclaimed albums “Yogi in My House”, “Sweet Misdemeanour” (both 1995) and “Beyond the Leap, Beyond The Law” (1997).

Following the sale of Demon in 1998, Martin moved on, releasing “When It’s Gone, It’s Gone” on the Tyneside-based independent, “Get Rhythm”, and during April 1999, released his eponymous album for the Floating World label. The album consists of re-recordings of some of his finest songs, from all stages of his career, free from commercial constraints of the mainstream music industry. Now relocated in the Highlands of Scotland, Martin remains a gifted, but self-effacing, and modest individual. He ploughs his own furrow, still refining his already prodigious musical skills. “The Lilac Tree”, a more acoustic-based project that displays further evidence of a maturing talent in its prime.

When he’s not singing in Tee-Pees with the highland tree People or playing the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with Janis Ian, you could see him standing on the corner in Inverness town with a banj/tar playing ragtime. Maybe travelling through Spain solo or with his swing band ‘The Toe-Rags’, cutting original ‘Sun-style’ tunes selling Vicar St out in Dublin – bang on Merle Travis & Scott Joplin! Blistering thumbpicking(!) or playing chess, writing poetry in an Alness Cafe or an intimate London show in the 12 Bar, Denmark St. next to “Hank’s” guitar shop where he hacked his two vintage Gibsons in 1992. But you’ll not see him drinking or with the fat cats. Time’s too short. There’s too much Doc Watson to learn out there!

Maryport 2008

A great day yesterday.  Great atmosphere, great music, great food and great weather.  The highlight for me was Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen Band.  They were absolutely incredible, one of the best bands that I have ever seen.

Photos are starting to trickle into Flickr.  Here’s one from marra121.

Review: Rocky Athas’ Lightning at Liverpool Marina – 17th July 2008

Rocky Athas

As The Rocky Athas Band had already delivered two stunning shows at Liverpool Marina, it was no surprise that the venue was packed to hear Rocky revert to a previous incarnation with drummer/vocalist, Walter Watson. They had taken Texas by storm in the 1980s with their band, Lightning, and this tour of the UK was a celebration of their music from that era. The trio was completed by Rocky Athas Junior on bass guitar.

The individual and collective quality of the Rocky Athas Band is particularly high. It is very much to his credit, therefore, that Rocky Junior did his father proud by forming a superbly tight foundation with Walter Watson to underpin Rocky Senior’s fabulous guitar work. A large part of the programme was taken from the relatively recent Lightning Strikes Twice album, most of which was written by Rocky Senior and Walter.

The show opened with the rocking shuffle, ‘River Flow’ and a couple of driving rockers – ‘Sanity’, which featured a blistering guitar solo, and ‘Ain’t It A Shame’. The slow blues, ‘I Will Love Again’ was embellished by another helping of virtuosity from Rocky Senior and the high-energy set reached a climax with ‘Shake your Money Maker’ and the fast-moving shuffle, ‘Stop, Drop And Roll’.

The second set was somewhat more varied in tempo than the first. It began with ‘Up To The Sky’, the lively opening number of the Lightning Strikes Twice album, before delivering an excellent version of ‘Little Wing’. The heavy rocking ‘Lightning Strikes Again’ led into Freddy King’s ‘Going Down’ and, if he was looking from above, the blessed Freddy would undoubtedly have been smiling broadly and nodding in approval. ‘Home Again’, co-written by Rocky senior and Larry Sandford, was unadulterated blues rock and was followed by Hendrix’s ‘Stone Free’, which featured a marvellous wah-wah-drenched guitar solo. The show ended with a taste of Dylan and a ‘Money Maker’ reprise as an encore.

The Lightning songbook is substantially more rock-oriented than that of the Rocky Athas Band. It is not for the faint-hearted and very possibly not entirely in keeping with the preferences of true blues enthusiasts. The emanation of the vocals from the back row of the ensemble rather than the more traditional front might also require adjustment. Nevertheless, the trio provided an evening of vibrant entertainment that was very enthusiastically received. Furthermore, the performance reinforced the fact that Rocky Athas is a fabulous guitarist, who can hold his own with the best.

Stax on BBC4 – This Friday

Friday 25 July 2008 is Stax night on BBC4

Respect Yourself – The Stax Story
Part of Stax Records Night.

The story is about Stax Records whose hits include Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay, Soul Man, If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don’t Wanna Be Right), Knock On Wood and Respect.

A white brother and sister established a recording studio in a black Memphis neighbourhood in the 1960s and their open-door policy created an interracial house band – Booker T and the MGs – who made hits for whomever came through those doors.

Those Stax stars included Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, The Dramatics, Albert King, Luther Ingram, Rufus Thomas and Jesse Jackson. The legacy has never been stronger and Stax songs have been recorded by scores of artists – Aretha Franklin, Neil Young, Wu Tang Clan, Michael Bolton and almost every artist wanting to express their soul.

Respect Yourself includes never before seen footage, including home movies by the Stax artists, outtakes from WattStax, lost performances by Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs, Isaac Hayes and others.

Interviews include all the key players plus Jesse Jackson, Elvis Costello, Bono, Chuck D, Peter Townsend, Dan Akroyd and Justin Timberlake. [S]

Stax Volt Tour of Norway 1967
Part of Stax Records Night.

This classic concert filmed in Norway during the 1967 Stax tour features some amazing performances from the soul legends signed to this famous US record label.

Among the highlights are live sets by Booker T and The MGs (Green Onions and Red Beans and Rice); Arthur Conley (Sweet Soul Music and In the Midnight Hour), Sam and Dave (Hold On and I’m Coming), Eddie Floyd (Raise Your Hand), the Mar-Keys (Philly Dog and Last Night) and a barnstorming, five-song set by the late, great Otis Redding that includes Try a Little Tenderness, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction, My Girl and Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song).
