I had not heard of Jerry Reed. So when I read on Blues-L that a famous country guitar picker called Jerry Reed had died I looked him up on YouTube, boy could that cat play..

Nice singer too. Be sure to stick to the end where Jerry plays a bit of Ray Charles. Check out some of the other great clips too.

You can read the BBC News article on Jerry at

Hi Ken
Are you sure you hadn’t come across Jerry Reed before? – from the original version of ‘Guitar Man’ the Presley hit (which pretty much sums Jerry Reed up) or from his acting in movies like ‘Smokey & The Bandit’, or best of all from his great song lyrics like “She got the goldmine and I got the shaft”

Only when reading the obituaries did I hear of Jerry Reed. I know the Elvis tune Guitar Man but back then I had no interest in knowing who wrote the song and played the guitar.

I have never seen Smokey and the Bandit.

I watched Jerry performing “She got the goldmine and I got the shaft” for the first time last night on YouTube.

I must have led a sheltered life.

btw there was a nice unconfirmed story on Blues-L last night….

He was doing an Elvis session and had a guitar solo in the song. Elvis loved the solo and it was released that way. However, Jerry always felt that he could have played it better and it stayed on his mind for years.

So after Elvis died, they were reissuing the cut and Jerry went into the studio with an engineer and the master tapes and put a new solo on the song.

He was happy, the label never knew and Elvis stayed dead . . .
