SATURDAY JANUARY 24th NINE BELOW ZERO – ELECTRIC SET – IN OVERTON ON DEE VILLAGE HALL – tickets needed in advance @ £15. Also on sale at Overton garage
The top UK R’n’B /blues band bring their amazing electric set to the area hence the location change . They played 12 nights at The Albert Hall supporting Eric Clapton, toured the UK with The Who, The Kinks, Brian May and Sting and their rhythm section of Gerry McAvoy and Brendan O Neill played with the legendary Irish blues rocker Rory Gallagher for 15 years
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 13th RICK PAYNE £10
A welcome return from one of the UK’s finest acoustic guitarists. Classically trained Rick runs legendary guitar workshops and has played worldwide. His blues guitar playing is awesome particularly his slide work and he has often been likened to the English Ry Cooder
SATURDAY MARCH 7th THE GROANBOX BOYS £10
This incredibly talented young international trio is comprised of Franco-American Cory Seznec (Banjo, guitars ) a Masters graduate of the LSE , American Michael Ward-Bergeman (accordion) a multi-talented musician who is currently working on a Francis Ford Coppola film score and Canadian percussionist Paul Clifford who also plays the Freedom Boot (wait and see). They are currently based over here and creating BIG waves and getting amazing reviews (Guardian Nov ’08) so we’re thrilled to be able to grab them while we can. Their music is a fantastic mix of blues, roots, jugband and traditional.
FRIDAY MARCH 20th MUD MORGANFIELD aka Muddy Waters Junior Venue tbc £15
It looks like we’ve clinched this gig (final details confirmed by January)
The son of the greatest blues man ever not only looks like, but sounds exactly like his Dad.
Backed by some of the UK’s top musicians, Big Joe Louis on guitar, Pete Wingfield (18 with a bullet) on piano, West Weston on harmonica, Matt Radford on bass and Pete Greatorex on drums, this gig will be possibly our only chance to see Mud in the north. We will transport you back in time to a southside Chicago blues bar for one unforgettable night.
SATURDAY APRIL 25th LOUISIANA RED backed by MICHAEL MESSER. £12
This will be a major coup again for us as 76 year old Red is rightly regarded as one of the most influential bluesmen to come from his country. Has played at all the major venues and festivals worldwide and making his 1st UK tour in years whilst Michael played a brilliant gig for us in January of 2008 and astounded us with the quality of his guitar work.
FRIDAY MAY 8th KENT DuCHAINE £10
One of our favourite USA acoustic guitarists makes a welcome return after 3 years. The prodigal son who has toured the world for years with his 70 year old battered National Steel guitar LeadBessie was partner for some years of Johnny Shines, the late partner of Robert Johnson. He has also played with many of the old legends and can tell many an amusing anecdote.
SATURDAY MAY 30th FRUTELAND JACKSON with Bob Hall and Hilary Blythe £11
Chicago acoustic guitarist Fruteland was born in Mississippi and is a true ambassador of the blues in the modern era being a leader in the “Blues in the schools” campaign in the USA. He played a superb gig for us in 2006 and is on a return tour with legendary Brit pianist Bob and his partner Hilary on bass who recently played with Diana Braithwaite and Chris Whiteley
