Article on Snooks Eaglin funeral

http://tinyurl.com/av67×6

“To conclude the service, an impromptu all-star band replaced a no-show church choir. It featured Toussaint on keyboards, Michael White on clarinet, Deacon John on guitar, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. on tambourine, Preservation Hall’s Ben Jaffe on tuba, Reggie Hall on organ and Charmaine Neville and Clarence “Frogman” Henry on vocals.

“Toussaint and Neville started “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” slow, then picked up the tempo as the full ensemble fell in behind them. Just before noon, the crowd followed Eaglin’s casket outside.”

Gig: Madeleine Peyroux – Liverpool Philharmonic – 29 April 2009

Madeleine Peyroux

Not blues but very bluesy.  Here are the details on a gig coming up in Liverpool later this spring.

MADELEINE PEYROUX
The Philharmonic, Liverpool

Wednesday 29 April, 7.30pm
£20, £25

Before breaking through with the million-selling Careless Love, the smoky-voiced contender for the Billie Holliday crown, Peyroux, paid her dues on the hallowed streets of Paris’s Latin Quarter, busking 20s and 30s jazz standards.

Her debut album Dreamland teamed her up with New York jazz luminaries Marc Ribot, James Carter et al, but it was Careless Love, with its intimate takes on Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith and Bob Dylan, that propelled her into the limelight.

The follow-up, Half the Perfect World (2007), confirmed her status as a major new voice on the international scene, this time with respectful nods to Serge Gainsbourg, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Her performance here at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in 2006 left the audience utterly enchanted and is still talked about. Equally anticipated, her brand new album is released just weeks before this show.

To purchase tickets, please call the box office on 0151 709 3789 or order online at www.liverpoolphil.com.

The three DVD set Americal Folk Blues Festival contains never before released footage of the big american legends on tour in Europe in the late 1960s.

There is some excitement in the harmonica community as the 1967 release has rare, rare footage of the legendary Little Walter.

J.J. Grey on Woodsongs

woodsongs

I have been a fan of JJ Grey for quite a while ever since Chuck Nevitt tipped me off to the original Cheap Ass Funk of Mofro.  Grey has a great voice and all the Mofro albums are worth a listen.  He has recently done a session for the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour that is available as audio or video.

http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp and look for show 515.

http://www.woodsongs.com/showdetailspage.asp?SN=515

JJ Grey is the show with The Duhks

JJ GREY was born and raised just outside of Jacksonville, Florida. Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern musical storytellers. Like the best of the great Southern writers, he fills his songs with details that are at once vivid and personal, political and universal. JJ and his band Mofro’s brand of front porch soul has steadily built an intensely loyal following since their debut CD in 2001. JJ’s new album Orange Blossoms, released on Alligator Records, takes another giant step forward. JJ will be performing solo acoustic on WoodSongs.

THE DUHKS return the WoodSongs stage to perform songs from their new CD Fast Paced World released on Sugar Hill Records. Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the band has been hailed by The New York Times as one of the artists at the forefront of the neo-folk movement. The band’s spot-on fusion of traditional bluegrass, folk rock, Afro-Cuban jazz and soul have earned them a Grammy Award nomination in the Best Country Vocal Performance category as well as a Juno award in their native Canada. Environmental issues are a passion for the band, inspiring them to launch The Duhks Sustainability Project in October 2007.

Review: The Stumble at Haig House, Liverpool – 20 February 2009

paul-melville2

This was the first gig presented by John and Lorraine Welsh at Haig House, the home of Garston Royal British Legion. The venue is spacious and comfortable and ideally suited to the large attendance that was attracted by the appearance of The Stumble. The atmosphere was excellent: a perfect match for a superb performance from the pride of Preston.

The band bounced into gear with “It’s A Lie” and “You Upset Me, Baby” before lead guitarist Colin Black switched to harp for “Kind Of Girl”. The slow and bluesy “Flesh And Bone” gave way to the upbeat “Bus Stop”, the first of several numbers from the band’s brilliant new album, Houngan. Vocalist, Paul Melville, then excelled on a fabulous rendition of “Ain’t Nobody’s Business”, which also featured sublime guitar work from Black and Jonny Spencer and a fine tenor sax solo from Simon Anthony. “Gonna Paint The Town Tonight”, a dose of unadulterated rock and roll, was followed by the rumba-rhythmed “Saturday Night” and “Leadin’ Me On”, with Anthony switching to baritone sax for the last two numbers. The first set was brought to a close with “The World Is Tough”, the excellent title track of the band’s previous album.

The second set opened with the Bo Diddley beat of “Your Love For Me” and a second helping of rumba with “Sugar Don’t Taste So Sweet”. The slow blues, “All Over Again”, then brought the house down, as it always does, with Melville once again magnificent on vocals, Black delivering a magical guitar solo and Anthony providing another excellent sax solo as he went walkabout amid the audience. The galloping pace of “Meet Me At The Bottom” was contrasted with the calming balm of “Sit Right Here” and the hypnotic beat of “Houngan”, which saw Colin Black revert to harp and Simon Anthony to baritone sax. Meanwhile, a splendid-looking didgeridoo remained conspicuously unplayed in the absence of any guest appearance by Harper.

The broad-ranged miscellany continued with “Let The Good Times Roll” and the medium-paced shuffle, “Be My Baby” when an unplanned hiatus occurred as a result of Jonny Spencer’s breaking a string. No problem. Undaunted, Paul Melville, simply filled the gap with a wonderful a capella delivery of “Sign Your Name”, accompanying himself on beer glass and coin. The climax arrived in the form of “Gimme Back Your Wig”, expertly driven by Spencer on slide guitar and the first class foundation of Boyd Tonner on drums and Dave Heath on bass guitar. The applause was deafening as was the call for an encore, to which the band responded with “Small World”.

There is little doubt that Haig House will be used again to host a blues gig: there is absolutely no doubt that The Stumble will be invited back.

New playalong CD

This looks great for budding blues players.  A great European band have made a whole CD of classic blues backing tracks.

As a harp player I know that the grooves and the keys are good for my instrument but I am sure that guitarists, keyboard players and others will enjoy the experience.  Check out the site and have a listen to the samples.

Naomi Mather

Naomi Mather

I recently posted an article on the new blues nights at Chameleon in Liverpool.

http://www.bluesinthenorthwest.com/index.php/2009/02/07/venue-chameleon-bar-liverpool/

One of the regular featured artists is Merseyside solo act Naomi Mather and I thought that I would do a quick feature on Naomi as I strongly believe in supporting young up and coming artists.

Here is Naomi’s biography.

You probably think that the guitar playing, foot stomping, hollering blues ladies only exist in black and white, but there is one left! Naomi Mather is a female singer/songwriter with a difference, her love and passion for delta blues. With her individual yet true to the roots guitar style and her gritty and sometimes English vocal approach she’s what you’d expect in a blues lady! Her songwriting displays sympathy to the traditional but is innovative and gives the time-loved genre a twist of modernity and a hint of folk. Her guitar style has been described by veterans of the blues as beyond her years and her use of the guitar for its percussive qualities and her left foot beating on her home-made stomp box keeps audience’s feet tapping. Her lyrics reveal much about herself and her life and she tells these honest stories of men, friends and spirituality with wry humour making audiences smile with comprehension.

For the past few years Naomi has been developing a devoted fan base in Liverpool and throughout the blues circuit in the UK and is quickly attracting the attention of critics, promoters and music lovers alike. Having recently released her EP ‘Born At The Wrong Time’, she believes now is the time to take her music travelling and she is planning to continue to play on the blues and folk circuit both in the UK and further a field keeping the Blues alive and growing music organically the natural way.

Quotations….

More Blues on Radio 2

Thanks to Paul Farmer for tipping me off to this.  As well as Paul Jones tomorrow at 7pm there is more blues at 11.30pm.

As part of the series Wish You Were There? in which presenters journey back to a performance by the artist that inspired them to make their own music, exploring how it shaped the careers of its performers and its wider effect on the music scene.

This week Richard Hawley harks back to a gig by blues artist Little Walter at the intimate Sheffield Esquire in 1964.
