Gig: Madeleine Peyroux – Liverpool Philharmonic – 29 April 2009
Posted on: Friday, Feb 27, 2009
Not blues but very bluesy. Here are the details on a gig coming up in Liverpool later this spring.
The Philharmonic, Liverpool
Wednesday 29 April, 7.30pm
Before breaking through with the million-selling Careless Love, the smoky-voiced contender for the Billie Holliday crown, Peyroux, paid her dues on the hallowed streets of Paris’s Latin Quarter, busking 20s and 30s jazz standards.
Her debut album Dreamland teamed her up with New York jazz luminaries Marc Ribot, James Carter et al, but it was Careless Love, with its intimate takes on Hank Williams, Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith and Bob Dylan, that propelled her into the limelight.
The follow-up, Half the Perfect World (2007), confirmed her status as a major new voice on the international scene, this time with respectful nods to Serge Gainsbourg, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Her performance here at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in 2006 left the audience utterly enchanted and is still talked about. Equally anticipated, her brand new album is released just weeks before this show.
