Thanks to Mike from The Cadillac Kings for tipping us off to the new documentary on the harmonica “Pocket Full of Soul”
The people’s instrument. The little ten-hole diatonic harmonica is an instrument that you can hide in your pocket and play on a mountain top, in a jail cell – or on a space shuttle. Originally used as a polka instrument in Germany, the harmonica quickly immigrated to the United States and inspired genius. It’s no toy. For proof, witness Little Walter Jacob, James Cotton, Jerry Murad and the Harmonicats, John Popper, Kim Wilson, and an amazing kid named Jason Ricci, and just about anybody who ever blew the house down with a “harp.” Narrated by Huey Lewis.
Looks like a decent documentary is on the horizon in the states. According to an email from Delta Groove Records they’re planning to screen it in Memphis in May as part of their 4th annual Delta Groove Review. It’s narrated by Huey Lewis (Mike’s better looking twin brother!) There are many top bluesers in the list of contributors, so it should be good.

PRESS RELEASE: PRESS RELEASE
LINE-UP FOR 2ND COLWYN BLUES FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED
A TOP line-up of musicians is scheduled to appear at Colwyn Bay’s second festival to celebrate blues music.
THE COLWYN BLUES FESTIVAL launched last year at Theatr Colwyn in the town and did so well that it is back again for 2009 – and this time it’s even bigger!
The Gutbucket Blues Band, Stormy Monday Blues Band and Down At Antones headline at the venue on Saturday, May 30, while on Sunday, May 31, the headline names will be The Crawl Blues Band, The Blues Gang and The John O’Leary Band.
In addition to last year’s programme, other blues bands will now play at five of the town’s pubs on the Saturday and Sunday from 3pm.
Barry Townsend, a stalwart volunteer at Theatr Colwyn, is once again helping to organise the festival in conjunction with the venue’s management and staff and, for the first time, the town’s publicans.
He said: “ We’ve brought in some of the country’s best blues bands especially for the festival as it continues to grow, already expanding beyond the original Theatr Colwyn venue.
“Most of the local pubs have joined in and will be providing ‘fringe’ sessions with other bands as well as the main acts in the theatre. They have also arranged ‘real ale’ special beers to be available during the weekend.
“It is hoped that all of Colwyn will see this as an important step in putting the town on the national map as others have already done which, in turn, will bring in lots of tourists for this event and other themed weekends to follow.
Tickets for the festival are now on sale (£12 for one day, £18 for the weekend) via Theatr Colwyn’s box office on 01492 532668 / 872000. For more information visit the festival’s website at www.colwynbluesfestival.com

Rhythm Zoo have established themselves as an exciting Rhythm and Blues band. There is a certain feverish excitement when they play, knocking out classic blues with a modern soul slant, they are able to cover a lot of ground in a short time.
The band is the brain child of guitarist Steve Alden whose collaboration with the Joplinesque Andi Harrison on vocals creates the foundation of an interesting mix of musical styles. Drummer Dermot Hall adds a solidity and guts to anchor the band as a unit, while the silky sultry tones of sax player Dave Roberts put the icing on the top. Binding the rhythm and melody is bassist Dave Wilmore.

Like others of his generation, in the early 1960s a love of the Blues gripped and inspired Dutch guitarist Theessink (pronounced ‘Tay Sink’). Country blues with its earthy and heartfelt sound is unmistakably at the root of his songs ever since but the variety of his musical genres he excels at has become a trademark.
The songwriter, and inimitable blues guitar performer has attained a unique status for a European. He has performed at many of the most prominent American music festivals including New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, the Edmonton Folk Festival, St.Louis Blues & Heritage Festival, King Biscuit Blues
Festival and theWoody Guthrie Festival.US magazine Blues Revue wrote: “Hans Theessink is an international blues treasure. He is one of the world’s pre-eminent country pickers and his warm baritone expresses blues”.

Hello readers,
Please can some of you help me out. I have recently updated the bluesinthenorthwest.com page for mobile devices and I wondered if some of you with fancy phones could try it out for me to be certain that it’s working.
Please navigate your phone to http://www.bluesinthenorthwest.com and send an email to nwblues@gmail.com to let me know….
a) If it works
b) What type of sexy phone you have
If you see the normal blues background and the large bluesinthenorthwest.com text then it’s not working. You should see a screen specially formatted for your phone.
Thanks folks.

Word has just come in from Kevin Johnson of Delmark Records that Chicago blues harmonica great Lester “Mad Dog” Davenport passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was a respected figure in Chicago blues, best known for his stunning harp work on Bo Diddley’s 1955 recordings of “Pretty Thing” and “Bring It To Jerome”. Lester Davenport was born in Tchula, Mississippi on January 16, 1932, and moved to Chicago at age 14. Lester soon found work as a blues harmonica player working with Arthur “Big Boy” Spires and Homesick James before landing a gig with Bo Diddley that led to the famous recording session and a gig at the Apollo Theater. In addition to harmonica, Lester also played bass, drums, and guitar, which ensured him lots of work in the active Chicago blues scene. During the 1970s, he worked with W.W. Williams, Kansas City Red, Illinois Slim, Steve Cushing, Tchula childhood friend Jimmy Dawkins, and many others. In the 1980s he toured extensively with Big Daddy Kinsey & The Kinsey Report. Lester Davenport’s career yielded 2 beautiful CDs: When The Blues Hit You on Earwig Music (1993) and I Smell A Rat on Delmark (2002). He also had a couple songs released on an anthology called It’s Great To Be Rich on the Red Lightnin’ label, and a song on Chicago Blues Harmonica, an anthology on the Wolf Record label. Lester’s recording credits as a sideman are extensive: Bo Diddley for Chess records, Big Smokey Smothers for Red Lightnin’, Willie Johnson, Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis, Johnny B. Moore for Wolf Records, Big Smokey Smothers, Big John Trice for Red Lightnin’, Aron Burton on Earwig, and Bonnie Lee and Willie Kent for Delmark. Aside from all of these great credentials, Lester was just a wonderful man who was eager to welcome new friends and share his harmonica secrets to aspiring players. He had a warm smile and the ability to add humor to any situation. His harmonica playing will be remembered for its glorious, sweet tone and perfect phrasing. Though he never achieved great fame, he will always be remembered as one of the greats. Funeral services will be this Saturday, March 28, 2009, 10am to 12pm, at A.R. Leak Funeral Home, 5000 W. Madison, Chicago, IL 60644.
