RIP Sam Carr

17 Apr 1926  to 21 Sept 2009

Beloved Mississippi blues drummer and band leader Sam Carr has passed away. He was 83. Sam was born into legend as the son of guitarist/vocalist Robert Nighthawk. Sam is best known for his longtime association with Frank Frost & The Jelly Roll Kings. He was considered one of the greatest blues drummers of all time, and was annually nominated for a Blues Music Award (AKA Handy Award) in the drummer category. He had been struggling with health issues over the last few years, and recently lost his longtime wife Doris, which forced him to live in a nursing facility.

Anothe one of the legends passes. We were so fortunate to see him play for a short set last year at The Biscuit. There is a superb clip of him playing with Alvin “Youngblood” Hart at Ground Zero Club in Clarksdale on the excellent DVD “Last of the Mississippi Juke Joints”. The consumate blues drummer – minimal effort without missing a beat. A very sad loss indeed.
