Review: The Cans – Demo CD

Posted on: Monday, Nov 2, 2009

Track listing: 1. Help Me. 2. Red House (live). 3. Killing Floor (live). 4. Are You Ready For The Country. 5. You Really Got Me. 6. Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Here’s a lively six-track from the Stockport-based The Cans – namely Steve Mullen (vocals, harmonica, rhythm guitar), Andy Millington (lead guitar, slide and vocals), Nolan Worthington (bass) and Andy Marshall (drums) – comprising four studio recordings and two live songs – all tried and trusted blues and rock classics.

The release kicks off with a lively run through Sonny Boy Williamson’s timeless “Help Me”, dominated by Steve Mullen’s harmonica and a vocal that sounds as if it’s through his harp microphone. The first live cut sees a lengthy live take on Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House”, with vocal and fine guitar from Andy Millington.

The late, great Howling Wolf’s “Killing Floor” is captured live, with a rough and tough guitar groove and thumping bassline from Nolan Worthington. It’s back to the studio for “Are You Ready For The Country”, with slide guitar from Andy Millington underpinning this Neil Young favourite.

The band turn to the Kinks signature tune “You Really Got Me”, with more tough guitar work, and the demo closes with a breakneck tear through Led Zeppelin’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll”, complete with more lusty harmonica from Steve Mullen – two endearing classics from the history of British rock!
