Gig: Lee Bates and Billy Newton – Dates in the region
Posted on: Wednesday, May 12, 2010
I say “in the region” but strictly speaking both these dates are out of the bluesinthenorthwest.com catchment. However I am going to make an exception for Lee Bates and Billy Newton. Here’s why…
Many years ago – some time around the late 80s or early 90s – I still had brown hair, was less than 13 stone and was still living in Huddersfield. I was out sampling a few Tetley Bitters in Bradford and rather worse for wear stumbled into The Castle Hotel see here — http://bit.ly/bDCVJm.
As a budding bluesman learning my craft on the harmonica, I was really glad and surprised to see an excellent blues band playing in the bar. This band featured Billy Newton on the harp and Neil Dalton on the guitar (I don’t recall the rhythm section). Despite my state, Billy allowed me to sit in for a couple of numbers – this was only my second time on stage, the first time with a harp friendly band; this certainly went a long way to helping me continue to learn and to do the things that I have. God bless you Billy and Neil.
Anyway! On to the gigs…..
Lee Bates & Billy Newton Blues Duo
- Hole In’t Wall, Hebden Bridge – Friday May 14th
- Castle Inn, Skipton – Sunday June 6th (afternoon)
Lee Bates and Billy Newton are two of the finest performers to emerge from the Northeast of England, an area long synonymous with authentic Blues players.
Billy Newton is one of the hottest harp players around, equally at home with the down-home wail of Sonny Terry and Noah Lewis or the big city sounds of Little Walter and Snooky Pryor.
Lee is a fine guitarist and singer, playing Delta and ragtime blues as well as being a formidable slide player; hammering out Son House and Bukka White songs on an old National or playing dirty electric-style riffs.
Together they deliver a hugely entertaining set of tunes taken from the Delta, Chicago, Jug Band Blues, Old Timey and beyond all delivered with a dose of irreverent humour.
Lee Bates and Billy Newton are guaranteed to get you up dancing and having a good time!
Lee and Billy have appeared at countless venues and festivals, including: Colne R’n’B Festival, Limavady Jazz and Blues Festival, Stroud Blues and Beyond, Upton Blues Festival, Glasgow Blues on the River, Bute Jazz Festival, Smokie Blues Festival, Dundee Blues Bonanza, Callandar Jazz and Blues Festival…
They have shared stages with everyone from British Blues stars Bob Hall and Steve Phillips to Steve James, Doug MacLeod and Honeyboy Edwards from the USA among many others.
Lee Bates and Billy Newton are quickly gathering a reputation a one of the most authentic and entertaining acts around.
New CD- ‘Nothing But Trouble’ one of the Blues In Britain Magzine pick of 2009!
