Thursday 3rd February
Kent DuChaine. £8/£7
USA based Kent DuChaine and his guitar Leadbessie are blues legends, his UK tour in 2001 was named as one of the five best concerts in the UK by the Sunday Times, he’s Grammy nominated and has seven solo albums, four wives and over eighty overseas tours under his belt, and will be in Chester as part of his new UK tour in February.
Duchaine started in music when his father taught him to play the ukulele at the age of six, at thirteen he got his first electric guitar and formed a band with his buddies in his hometown of Wayzata, Minnesota. After reading some liner notes of an Eric Clapton album Kent started researching blues music, immersing himself in the music of Johnson, Muddy Waters, Lightening Hopkins, T-Bone Walker and Bukka White (who he later opened a show for). DuChaine learned to play the slide guitar and soon developed his own ferocious wild style. When in the ‘Fabulous Thunderbirds’, the band backed up blues greats such as Fenton Robinson, Boogie Woogie Red, Luther Tucker, Hubert Sumlin and Eddie Burns.
It wasn’t until 1979 that Kent met up with his beloved and ever faithful Leadbessie, a beat up 1934 National Steel Guitar that wows audiences when the equally beat up case she travels in is opened and her extra heavy strings are furiously played.
DuChaine’s association with Johnny Shines began in 1989; they traveled together for three years and performed over 200 shows together including the ‘Roots Of Rhythm And Blues: A Tribute To Robert Johnson Era’. This was recorded by Sony/Columbia and was Grammy nominated. Kent and Johnny’s wonderful partnership and friendship was cut short when Johnny Shines sadly passed away in April 1992.
So what has life been like since going solo? Kent: “Since hitting the roads, riding the rails, flying the skies and sailing the seas, me and Leadbessie have probably by now clocked up over two million miles together, yup, she’s faithful old girl!”
Kent DuChaine will be at BB’s Blues Club at Alexander’s in Chester on Thursday 3rd February 2010, tickets are £8/£7 advance.
