Gig: Michael Roach and Johnny Mars – Worthenbury – 18 Feb 2011
Posted on: Monday, Feb 14, 2011
Michael Roach and Johnny Mars make their first duo appearance in the area on Friday February 18th at Goin’ Up The Country Blues & Roots Club in Worthenbury, nr Wrexham.
Whilst individually Michael has been at the forefront of the acoustic Piedmont style of guitar playing and Johny has been recognised as an outstanding harp player, it is only very occasionally that they join forces to reproduce some of the classic guitar/ harp duo music characterised by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Cephas and Wiggins.
Michael Roach is originally from Washington DC and specialises in the East coast country style of acoustic blues and learnt his craft from John Jackson, John Cephas and Jerry Ricks whilst Johnny who hailed from South Carolina, the son of a sharecropper made his name in vibrant 60s of San Francisco playing alongside Santana, Paul Butterfield and even Jimi Hendrix. He was even given the title ” the Jimi Hendrix of the harmonica”. Blues players he played with included Jesse Fuller, BB King and Earl Hooker.
This promises to be an outstanding gig and has created a lot of interest. Tickets are £12 and can be reserved by ringing 01948 770215. Doors are 8pm for a 9pm start.
