24 Pesos (plus Marcus Bonfanti as support)

Brickyard, Carlisle

28 May 2011

Fast emerging as the most exciting new British Blues Band in years, 24 PESOS, play the Brickyard in Carlisle on Saturday May 28th supported by guitarist Marcus Bonfanti who will perform with keyboard wizard Paddy Milner.

24 Pesos hail from London and Australia. Formed only two years ago they have gigged incessantly around the UK and Europe honing to perfection their own brand of raw and rootsy blues mixed with the sound of deep fried southern soul funk. Their reputation for performing energetic and electrifying live shows has quickly earned them a large fan base who have identified a band with something unique to offer rather than the usual cliché ridden Blues fare.

The band are composed of Guitarist and Singer Julian Burdock who formed the band in 2008 following a stint with Soul Legend Geno Washington, Silas Maitland who plays Bass, Hammond player Moz Gamble and Drummer Mike Connolly. Their musical influences are diverse and this is reflected in their recent album ‘Busted, Broken and Blues’ which gives a nod to such genres as Soul, Funk, Rock and even Hip Hop. This sounds like a strange mix but the album has received worldwide acclaim for its originality and drive. The album was going to be called ‘Neckbones and Gumbo’ however this was changed to reflect events in Westminster, political corruption and recession.

An all expenses paid September trip to New Brunswick in Canada to feature in the international Blues festival has been a recent high profile award for 24 Pesos following them winning a nationwide ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition.
Capturing the support slot at the Brickyard are Marcus Bonfanti and Paddy Milner who are no strangers to Carlisle having both played at the City’s Blues festival. Bonfanti with his rock star looks has leapt into the music spotlight at the same time as 24 Pesos to showcase his amazing guitar skills which should have local guitar afficionados either drooling at his remarkable dexterity or weeping into their pint pots at his seemingly unattainable high standards. He’s a wildly versatile guitarist who can handle almost anything in the electric, country or folk-blues field, ranging from stomping blues that echo Jimmy Page through to delicate acoustic finger-picking, with some sturdy vocal work and impressive harmonica playing. You will be stunned by Marcus’s stage presence and musicianship. He’s certainly the leading name in the British Blues guitar field at present.

Paddy Milner has played and performed with a host of big names ranging from Jack Bruce, Joss Stone, Sandi Thom and BB King as well as ex Carlisle resident, ‘Rumer’. His well honed keyboard and songwriting skills have seen him much in demand as a sideman for major artists both on stage and in the studio. His intimate ‘duo’ work with Marcus Bonfanti allows him to push his talents to the limit and highlight his keyboard skills.

The annual British Blues awards have certainly taken the nights performers to heart with nominations for Marcus Bonfanti as Best Male Vocals and Guitar, 24 Pesos as Best Blues Band and Album of the Year, Paddy Milner and Moz Bamble of 24 Pesos as Best Keyboard and Silas Maitland as Best Bassist.

Both 24 Pesos and Marcus Bonfanti were featured on Radio 2 last month further confirming their meteoric rise within the Blues world. There’s a wealth of talent in these performers and they reflect the current strength of the emerging British Blues scene.
The doors open at 8.00 and tickets are £10 in advance and £12 on the door.
