Review: The Revelators – BJ’s at Hop Pocket, Chorley – 04 Aug 2011

The Hop Pocket public house on Carr Lane Chorley, the number one venue for live music, opened its doors on the 4th of August to BJ’s Blues Club presented by music guru Lucas Campbell and hosted the return of the mighty REVELATORS.

This superb four piece band from the Bury area, delighted the packed crowd and put on a show and a half, lasting one and three quarter hours.  The band have a playing history going back to the 80s – honing their skills and perfecting their act.

The  band have a CD entitled “HITS and MISFITS”, they played several tracks from it, and an excellent CD it is.  This band has two exceptional lead guitarists in Mark Hopkins, the band’s front man and lead vocal, and Rick Lucus.  Rick’s slide guitar work was brilliant; the pair swapped the role back and forth – telepathy was evident here.

The band’s pounding heart was provided by the rhythm section – two left handed musicians at that, which you don’t see too often.  Aaron Lloyd was on a very smooth sounding bass guitar – a lesson in bass playing here and not to shabby when it comes to singing a few songs either.  A laid back style, yes, but a fantastic one.  The other half of this rhythm section was drummer Scott Broadhurst, this guy could play kitchen equipment and a pedal bin and it would sound great.  Scott has the ability to make any drum sequence look easy, which is what a excellent drummer does.  Spot on Scott. Terrific!

The band gave us two sets of blues, a mix of their own material and classic covers.  The crowd shouted for more and the band obliged, they love to put on a show and they did just that.  The band are busy and  it’s no surprise to me that they are in demand all over the Northwest.  These guys are at the top of their game right now and I predict that new horizons are round the corner for this hard working band.  As they say in the Greater Manchester area, they will be UP FOR IT.  I hope things work out for them it’s richly deserved.

My thanks as always go to Lucas Campbell for keeping  LIVE MUSIC ALIVE.
