Review: Michael Burks – Overton Village Hall

Posted on: Saturday, Sep 3, 2011

As you probably know I am not a great one for writing reviews and features, I usually leave that to my friends and site partners.  However, I had to put pen to paper – finger to keyboard and say a few words about the superb gig in Overton last night.

Michael Burks is the real deal.  Super-intense, an amazing vocalist with a deep and soulful powerhouse blues voice, his guitar is just perfect, hitting that fine line between classic blues and a more modern rock edge.  There are echoes of all the greats in Michael Burks but none more so that Albert King; it is possible to hear Albert in Michael echoing through the generations.  The band are superb.  There is telepathy between Burks and drummer Popcorn.

Any blues fan living within 50 miles of Overton who didn’t go last night should be kicking themselves very hard indeed.  They missed a pure masterclass in intense blues from a modern master.

The Iron Man – never has a nickname been so appropriate.

Thanks Ken – much appreciated. As I said in reply to Wolfman, it certainly was a memorable night. Michael was relaxed and certainly on form and I can tell you, he really enjoyed the night.
I feel that he was better on Friday than he was last year and it was without a doubt one of the best gigs we’ve presented in our 15 years – blues at its very best. I strongly believe that we will do it again one day. Unfortunately, as it is an expensive gig to promote, not many promoters will gamble so we may have to wait for a festival to see him again in another part of the country – Maryport and Colne please take note.

Spot on Pete. One of the best gigs you have ever presented.

Can’t believe the festivals haven’t had him over.

Michael is the real deal, myself and Andrea tried to discuss the possibility of getting him for the Theatre of Blues – Shrewsbury on Feb 4th 2012. He did work out too expensive. 🙁
