“The Darkness Of My Mind” /
“The Soul Of A Man”
(7″ vinyl single: Red Mouth Records 001)
Hailing from Muscle Shoals, Alabama is Red Mouth – aka Eric Gebhardt – a one-man alt. blues performer, who has released this two song 7″ vinyl single that was recorded in the flourishing blues scene of Tartu in Estonia, at The White Room studio, where his good friend, collaborator, and top local bluesman Andres Roots works.
If you can imagine a mix of Delta legends such as Son House and Blind Willie Johnson for example, and the likes of Captain Beefheart and The Stooges you will not be far off the menacing but engaging music of Red Mouth.
The lengthy “The Darkness Of My Mind” features just Red Mouth on guitar, percussion and vocal, together with the sweet harmonica of Jantso Jokelin . . . it’s a sort of croon meets howl and is self-penned and very emotive. The second cut is the immortal Blind Willie Johnson tune, “The Soul Of A Man”, which again features Jokelin and also Peeter Piik on upright bass . . . again the music is dark and brooding but totally demanding of your attention.
