Review: The Extras at BJs Blues Club at The Hop Pocket, Chorley – 9th February 2012
Posted on: Sunday, Feb 12, 2012
The Extras burst onto the stage, and gave us more than a taste of the 70 ‘s London pub R&B/Rock scene.
This was a time of pre-punk, but its delivery was every bit as pacey and proud, ‘in your face’ R&B with attitude.
The Extras, covered several Dr Feelgood tracks that typified that genre of British Blues.
Joan Bimson, on bass guitar and backing vocal, was just brilliant, a punishing and energetic performance, ‘Little Miss Nitro’
of a bass player, that you could not take your eyes off, terrific!
The other half of this driving rhythm section was on the drums, Sean Holland, a crisp and precise performance and a stinging snare drum , just on fire.
The lead guitar was a masterclass of riffs and slide work, Dave Woods, his playing on the number, ‘Moonchild’ alone
was just fantastic, a high calibre musician, in every sense of the word.
Lastly, the front man, lead singer, Darren ‘I’m Up Here’ Lee, he kept the pressure on, and put in an impressive shift, he reached boiling point and held it there, amazing stuff.
The cd available through the band and on the bands website www.theextras.co.uk, is vintage , R&B, and Dr Feelgood’, led. With nine numbers to pick from, it’s a typical ‘have a good time’ album.
The tracks to get you in the mood, are, ‘That’s It I Quit’ ‘Take A Tip’ ‘Lights out’ ‘Roxette’, ‘Moonchild’, need I say more, you get the drift , pumping stuff, to get your dancing shoes on.
Call the doctor, pass me a pill, I feel good, yes much better!
