Gig: Watermelon Slim – Worthenbury, Sat 31 Mar 2012
Posted on: Friday, Mar 23, 2012
8pm for 9pm show – £13
With special guest Johnny Hewitt on harmonica
There is so much that can be written about Watermelon Slim from his stint in the Vietnam war to his subsequent protest about its futility – to his multitude of jobs to feed his family – trucker, forklift driver, sawmill worker (where he lost part of a finger), funeral operator and watermelon farmer in Oklahoma (from where he got his moniker).
On top of that, he has two undergraduate degrees and a Masters degree, whilst becoming a member of Mensa!!!
However it is from the blues that he made his name and it can be best described from his website …
An ever-expanding career of ramshackle grandeur.
Bill “Watermelon Slim” Homans has built a remarkable reputation with his raw, impassioned intensity. HARP Magazine wrote “From sizzling slide guitar…to nitty-gritty harp blowing…to a gruff, resonating Okie twang, Slim delivers acutely personal workingman blues with both hands on the wheel of life, a bottle of hooch in his pocket, and the Bible on the passenger seat.” Paste Magazine writes “He’s one hell of a bottleneck guitarist, and he’s got that cry in his voice that only the greatest singers in the genre have had before him.”
This is a gig that you must not miss and as a bonus Johnny Hewitt, the region’s top harp player has been invited to join Slim for some of his set… who knows, they may have a harp blowout!!!
Tickets are going quickly so get back to me asap as this will sellout. We already have people coming from great distances to the gig.
