Gig: The Extras at BBs Blues Club, Alexander’s, Chester – 05 Apr 2012

Posted on: Friday, Mar 30, 2012

Thursday, 5th April sees the first appearance at BB’s Blues Club, of The Extras,  formed by guitarist Dave Woods and bassist Joan Bimson in the early part of 2010. Darren Lee on vocals and Sean Julian Holland on drums complete the line-up.
Musically, the band is heavily influenced by the London rhythm and blues scene of the mid-seventies. At a time when rock music had peaked in pomposity, the fresh, pared down approach of artists such as Dr. Feelgood, Nick Lowe and The Pirates provided a welcome jolt to the music industry. ‘Pub Rock’, as it became known, created a live music scene which embraced
its audience rather than distancing them in massive stadia. It greatly influenced the punk movement, which followed hard on its heels.
The Extras are guitar driven; the sound is edgy and aggressive and the performance is energetic and passionate. The combination of punk-like enthusiasm with musical expertise creates a uniquely exciting sound, and a dynamic live show.
Darren Lee (lead vocals) has worked as a solo artist for many years as well as being frontman for “rhythm and punk” outfit, The Unsociables. Although his tastes veer towards the harder edge of rock, a shared love of R ‘n’ B brought him to the Extras. Darren’s stage presence, personality and off-the-wall humour are an integral part of the band’s show.
Sean Holland (drums) has been at the top of his game for many years and has been involved with production editor Sidur Gudmund, sampling with Mr C & performing with Talvin Singh to name just a few. He has recently finished recording with renowned musicians and producers including John
‘Rabbit’ Bundrick (keyboard player for The Who), Phil Spalding (Elton John, Robbie Williams) and Pete Smith (Sting, Del Amitri). Sean is also an accomplished composer with a string of scores produced for TV and film.
Joan Bimson (bass and backing vocals) has had many years pro experience, sharing the stage with luminaries such as Nine Below Zero, Spencer Davis, Eric Bell, Danny Bryant, King King, and many more. She has toured nationally and internationally.
Dave Woods (guitars) played with the Liverpool greats at the legendary Cavern and went on to work alongside Gary Moore and Country Joe and The Fish, amongst others, enjoying a psychedelic stint with Gary Thain of Uriah Heep. Highly respected as a musician, Dave “The Prof” also has an encyclopedic knowledge of music.
