Matt Baxter & Jake Sampson – Haunted

(Auburn Sky)

This duo is based in San Francisco, and here the two men are mostly in an acoustic format. Guitarist Matt has played with all kinds of people, from Ska legend Prince Buster to Donny Osmond (!), whilst singer/ bassist Jake has already had several albums and his strong, expressive voice is a little akin to Taj Mahal.

Taj is actually a good reference point for these guys, whose deep Mississippi-styled blues sounds very authentic without simply copying the greats, containing shades of John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson and Fred McDowell, whilst the electric ‘Don’t It Make You Feel Good’ is an excellent West Side Chicago styled number.

A fine, straightforward, but extremely pleasing and immaculately played, blues album.
