Pam Taylor Band – Hot Mess

(Pam Taylor Music)

Pam Taylor is a sassy, powerful, self-taught singer and guitarist from South Carolina, with a muscular band offering strong support – particularly saxophonist Mike Taylor whose playing can be deliciously low-down. Her material is all original with the exception of a very fine, lilting cover of ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, and she comfortably mixes classic soul, blistering blues-rock guitar breaks, and other blues and rock elements – visit her website and take a listen to ‘Not The Only One’ if possible, as this combines all these ingredients in around five and a half minutes.

For something a little more straightforward maybe, try ‘All The Same To Me’ with its fine slide guitar riding a Rolling Stones riff, or the slowish, impassioned, nearly seven minutes long blues, ‘Next Time You Think Of Cheating’. Pam and company have created a confident and lively set that should definitely appeal to lovers of the modern blues.
