Review: King Bee – BJs Rock In The Blues @ The Hop Pocket, Chorley: 10.10.13

Mike Atherton, blues guitarist and lead vocalist and co-founder of the Lancaster based band Hustle, has formed a new blues band, and in doing so has had the presence of mind to bring with him Jake Jackson – a brilliant keyboard player, and he really gives the band a full round sound and weaves his spell in and around Mikes guitar playing – just superb.

The rhythm section as always has a key part to play in any band, so on the drums was Steve Hughes and a new bass guitarist in Mike Bannon. This pairing got off to a good rhythmic start. King Bee have only been an item since the beginning of August this year, but have already a good understanding musically, such is the combined talent of these four fine musicians.

This was only their third gig and I was quite impressed, but as time goes by I can see this band maturing in to something special and will be in demand on the blues circuit here in the North West. Mike has a passion for the blues and has written original works for some time and in some cases reworked this material to suit this four-piece band.

Progress is assured for this foursome – the talent is there, and interesting times are ahead.
