The Welsh T Band -Where The Road Leads
From West Yorkshire, the well seasoned Welsh T Band consists of Terry John – a.k.a. ‘Welsh T’ – vocals & guitar, Kevin ‘Geetar’ Ackroyd – lead guitar, David Hoyle – bass & backing vocals, Dan Burnett – drums, with guests Steve Dymond on keys and Mick Shaw on harmonica.
They have been together since the late 90’s and have been gigging on a regular basis ever since. They say they have – ‘As authentic a blues sound as you’ll find this side of a Mississippi road house…’ and I’d agree with that! There are lots of vintage Fender and Gibson guitars on the album and a 52 Gibson EM150 electric mandolin too!
First on the CD, ‘Lucky Man’ , I really liked this particular track, shades of Johnny Cash meets George Thorogood with some great vocals from Terry.
Next an up tempo number, ‘Sweet Shop’ .. not sure of this one, a bit 80’s for my taste, but well put together.
Bringing in a slow number with a country feel on ‘I Dont Know’, with David playing a 1953 Gibson Console Grande. It’s like a pedal steel without the pedals!
‘How Much’, a slow blues. Nice vocals from Terry and haunting guitar from Kevin with a hint of Peter Green.
Getting a bit ‘rock n’ roll’ with ‘April Fool Blues’, a ‘swing’ number with nice piano and easy guitar.
Next a lovely slow blues number, ‘It’s Cold Outside’. A classic 12 bar … simple but effective, with Hammond in the background. Nice guitar solo from Kevin and a bit of that ‘steel’ sound from David.
Bit heavier stuff now with ‘Place In My Heart’ . A great raw, rock blues with Kevin doing his ‘thang’ with a bit of fuzz box, excellent!
The title track ‘Where The Road Leads’, is an up tempo number, with some class harmonica from Mick Shaw and guitar playing from Kevin. Good vocals from Terry and a nice solid rhythm section from David and Dan.
All in all a well put together album.
