Review: The Hoax – The Mechanics, Burnley Rock & Blues Festival: Saturday, 3rd May, 2014

As part of the scaled down Burnley International Rock & Blues Festival, The Hoax were headlining on this Saturday evening main event at The Mechanics.
With support from two North West bands, Good Fox, a young high energy band from Clitheroe; and Minor Blues a blues rock band from Manchester, with a great sax player, the evening started slowly. As the time drew near for The Hoax to come on stage, the ‘bodies’ came piling in …. and they were not disappointed!
It’s hard to believe it’s 20 years ago that The Hoax began and that they appeared on the Jools Holland Show in 1995. It’s their second reformation in latter years and this was the final gig of their current tour, to promote their CD ‘Big City Blues’ released in 2013 …. and what a set!!!!
From the off, Hugh Coltman gave it his all, with his gritty vocals and wonderful blues harp playing. Jon Amor and Jesse Davey, two ‘class’ guitar players in their own right, played toe curling solo’s. With a superb rhythm section, Robin Davey on bass and Mark Barrett on drums, the evening just got better and better.
You can’t really describe the sound of the band in words … although ‘brilliant’ springs to mind, but a great take on a class track ‘Hipslicker’ in a Youtube clip, will give you an idea of what they are all about. A magic evening and let’s hope they’ll be back!!! http://youtu.be/E9VsNh3XhN8
