BAKER’S FABULOUS BOYS

SATURDAY, 10TH MAY

8.30 PM

It’s been in the region of four years since this brilliant trio last entertained us at the Village Hall.

Baker’s Fabulous Boys comprise Lorraine Baker and brothers Russ and Stuart Williams. Individually they are all accomplished musicians, but collectively on upright bass, mandolin, guitar and occasionally banjo, they produce Bluegrass and Western Swing of the highest order.

Since they last visited us, they have performed numerous gigs and received great acclaim at numerous festivals. If you haven’t seen them or don’t ‘fancy’ bluegrass, throw away any preconceptions you may have and join us for what is sure to be another excellent night of live music for live people!

VSO FUND RAISING NIGHT

THURSDAY, 15th MAY, 8:00pm

PIERPOINT’S CLUB, THELWALL LANE, LATCHFORD, WARRINGTON

Peter Price and many of his musical friends will be playing at Pierpoint’s Club, Latchford, on Thursday 15 May at 8 pm. Tickets £8. Expect the usual mix of Blues, Jazz, Country, Swing, East European, Irish and Music Hall music all cooked up and served by some wonderful musicians – many of whom will be familiar to those of you who attend the legendary annual Christmas sessions at Appleton Thorn Village Hall . Also, a few members of the Harry Goulden Big Band will be performing a great set of Jazz Standards. Who knows where all this will lead to on the night , but it should be an absolute cracker!

Tickets will be available from Pierpoint’s Club or Roger Kenyon on 07946 378599.

All proceeds are going towards VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas), an organisation that Peter’s daughter , Sophie, is volunteering to work with from June this year. As part of Sophie’s commitment, she has been set a target of £800 to raise for Voluntary Service Overseas.

Sophie, who recently graduated from Sheffield University, is volunteering for three months on a development programme in Nigeria bringing young people together to fight poverty and make a difference. She will be based in Eko, Nigeria, working alongside local volunteers on projects focused on Youth Participation in Governance.

The money that Sophie raises will allow them to sustain the projects that they deliver, and continue to provide young people from the UK with the opportunity to help the world’s most vulnerable people.

Your support on what should be a cracking night would be much appreciated.

STEVE TILSTON

SATURDAY, 29TH NOVEMBER

8:30pm

Thought I’d give as much advance warning as possible of this one!

Ask anyone on the English acoustic music scene who their favourite guitarist, singer, songwriter and entertainer is and Steve’s name crops up in every department.

He’s been described as “a complete guitarist,” “a singer songwriter of rare talent” and “absurdly accomplished.” He’s toured with John Renbourn’s Ship of Fools, traditional singer Maggie Boyle, in WAZ!, with Maartin Allcock and Pete Zorn, Ballet Rambert, and with his daughter Martha. He’s the writer of the classic The Slipjigs and Reels, The Naked Highwayman and Here’s to Tom Paine and his songs have been covered by a who’s who of the folk scene.

Just over forty years on and Steve’s on as fine form as ever with no signs of him slowing down just yet… his latest release Happenstanceout now, following hot-on-the-heels of the award-winning The Reckoning (“Best Original Song” Folk Awards 2012), plus appearances on Later with Jools Holland, BBC Four’s Songwriters’ Circle.

Perhaps best known for his song-writing prowess, Steve is also a blinding, dazzling guitarist with a style echoing the elaborate rhythmic “folk baroque” of Bert Jansch and Davy Graham, but also drawing from classical, roots and the tradition to create a sound that has been called quintessentially Tilston.
