‘The Etta James Songbook’ – is presented by International West End vocalist MaKuini who brings her heart, soul and funk to the story of Etta’s turbulent life and sings her best loved songs including: ‘Tell Mama’, ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’, ‘Pushover’, the heart rending ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, ‘Good Rockin Daddy’ from the HSBC television advert, Etta’s iconic signature song ‘At Last’ and more.
MaKuini will be joined on stage by the sizzling hot Hoo Doo Men that will get you out of your seat and dancing in the aisles! The Hoo Doo Men features Pete ‘Sarge’ Frampton – guitars, George Glover (Climax Blues Band) – keyboards, Paul Burgess (10cc) – drums, Wayne Morgan (The Drifters) – bass.
Pronounced Ma Queenie, the name means White Queen.
The story starts not on the Mississippi delta but on the banks of the Whanganui River, in the rural village of Jerusalem, New Zealand.
MaKuini was introduced at a young age to the sounds of Mahalia Jackson, Etta James, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Not long after arriving in the UK, MaKuini was cast opposite Yul Brynner in the ‘King & I’ at the London Palladium. One of the high lights of her career being her appearance in the Royal Variety Show for Her Majesty The Queen, at The Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Over the years MaKuini has presented her ‘Ladies of Soul’ in residencies throughout the UK, Malta, Tenerife, Cyprus, Mallorca, Dubai and Cruise Ships around the world.
MaKuini had the honour of opening the 2013 Rugby League World Cup with games televised around the world.
The recently released EP ‘ Roll of The Dice’ and the album ‘Blues In My Bones’ have both received good press and reviews, with ‘I Am The River’ being featured on the Classic Rock Blues magazine cover album. ‘Blues in My Bone’ is currently featured on Air New Zealand 747 in-flight music channels.
It is not only her remarkable voice but her drive and personality that have made MaKuini one of New Zealand’s best loved singers around the world today.
