Review: Poorboy – BJs Rock In The Blues at The Minstrel, Chorley: Thursday, 15th May

Posted on: Saturday, May 24, 2014

This four-piece blues band travelled from the Leeds area to entertain the faithful packed crowd  in Chorley, at The Minstrel, the new home every Thursday for BJ’s Rock in the Blues Club.

On this warm night we settled down to some excellent blues music from this very professional band. The founder and frontman Paddy Wells – on lead vocal and a superb blues harp – gave us a plethora of blues covers with “Born in Chicago”, “Find Someone New”, “Too Many Drivers”, that set the trend – we were in for a treat, and the atmosphere was building.

With superb lead guitar work throughout from Gary Whittaker and the rhythm section of bass guitarist Fredric Hiebler and Jez Ferrar on drums; the line-up was complete and the foursome just ripped into overdrive. The wailing harp with interplay from Gary and a full round sound from Fredric and Jez set the music ablaze and the dance floor covered

There was no let- up in the second set with “Some Days”, “Mystery Train”, “I’m Ready” – blues to blow your mind. This was a show and a half and the audience showed their appreciation and called for more and the band obliged.

This was a superb blues show from a very hard-working band that will be recording a new CD in the not too distant future and will be performing at this year’s Colne R&B Festival, celebrating its 25th year.

My thanks to Gerri and her staff at The Minstrel they made us very welcome and the sandwiches were a nice gesture. Thank you.
