Farewell to James Wheeler . . .

Posted on: Saturday, Dec 27, 2014

Sad to report the death on Christmas Day of Georgia-born, Chicago-based bluesman James Wheeler, at the age of 77.

James Wheeler played the Dragon Blues Festival in 2003 at Wrexham Rugby Club, backed by Manchester band, The Harpbreakers, and also toured the UK backed by Big Blue House.

Very sad news. James brought an amazing bit of Chicago blues to our festival in 2003 and the Harpbreakers did a brilliant job for us that night. The following year I arranged a short UK tour for him backed by the excellent Nantwich band Big Blue House. The tour was a superb success and everyone who met him commented on what a lovely gentleman he was. We met up with him afterwards a couple of times in Chicago and he always went out of his way to catch up with us. A true gentleman of the blues, he was a beautiful fluid player, with a wonderful tone. A great loss to Chicago blues.
