Blues Caravan 2014 – Laurence Jones, Christina Skjolberg, Albert Castiglia – Live
(Ruf Records: RUF 1210 – CD/DVD)
Now in its 10th year, the Ruf Records ‘Blues Caravan 2014’ brings together three guitarists from the labels roster – namely fast-rising British player, Laurence Jones; the ‘jewel in the crown’ here, the superb Albert Castiglia, from Florida; and from Scandinavia, Norway’s own Christina Skolberg – over the CD/DVD package they perform a number of their own tunes and some standard covers – the running order slightly differing between the two formats.
Recorded just over a year ago, on 9th February, 2014, at Harmonie in Bonn, Germany, the trio of guitarists are backed by the fine rhythm section of Roger Inniss (bass) and Miri Miettinen (drums). As mentioned the three principals share a mix of tunes, mostly from their Ruf releases, and the proceedings get underway with the Laurence Jones-penned tune that is in a way the title cut, “Join Me On The Blues Caravan”, which leads to a three song segment highlighting Christina Skolberg, all written by the lady herself, who made waves with her “Come And Get It” album.
Albert Castiglia’s “Solid Ground” was a truly cracking album, and from that we have the storming “Put Some Stank On It” and as covered, The Rolling Stones classic, “Sway” from the “Sticky Fingers” milestone release. The ensemble tackle a couple of chestnuts in Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” and both formats close with Robert Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago”.
The DVD has a few interesting performances, not on the audio CD, namely some Freddie King in the shape of “Freddie’s Boogie”; the often-covered blues of “Going Down Slow” and the late, great JJ Cale’s “Cocaine”.
If you like your blues high-energy, rocky and guitars to the fore, this is for you!
