Dale Storr at Alexander’s, Chester – 7th May, 2015
On a day when the city was thronging with race-goers, an incredibly sparse audience was privileged to enjoy a masterclass in New Orleans style piano at Alexander’s. Like the true professional that he is, despite the low turnout, the Sheffield-based maestro gave his all, as he treated those present with two wonderful sets, separated by the shortest of breaks.
The first set was graced with brilliant deliveries of numbers from the songbooks of two of Dale’s major influences, James Booker and Dr John, intermingled with excellent versions of “Stagger Lee”, Chris Kenner’s “Somethin’ You Got”, “Sea Cruise” and “Hi Heel Sneakers”, ending with a rousing rendition of “Roll ‘Em, Pete”.
The second set opened equally brightly with “Rockin’ Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu” and produced further, welcome helpings of Dr John and Booker in the form of “Such A Night”, “Classified” and a fabulous delivery of “Keep On Gwine”. There was also a very distinctive version of “Good Night, Irene” and two loudly demanded encores.
Once again, Dale Storr demonstrated his mastery of the keyboard with a mesmerising display to the absolute delight of each and every one of the fourteen punters who were fortunate to be there.
