Josh Smith – Over Your Head

(CrossCut Records: CCD 11109)

The Florida-raised, LA-based guitarist Josh Smith fairly sizzles on “Over Your Head” – his third release for the one of the premier European labels, the German outfit CrossCut Records. At 35 years of age he may be slightly ‘under the radar’ compared to some of his contemporaries, but the rocking and powerful blues here, with a tight trio format, will delight all guitar fans.

Smith fronts a dynamic rhythm section of Calvin Turner (bass) and Lemar Carter (drums), who are brilliant players, and unfussily lay down the grooves for Josh Smith to deliver his sparkling guitar work on top, with soulful voice. Helping out are Charles Jones (vocals), Jeff Babko (keyboards), BJ Kemp (backing vocals) and Chicco Gussoni (guitar).

Also he calls on three more well-known friends for guest spots, namely Joe Bonamassa, who delivers some trademark guitar on “Over Your Head”; the much in-demand blues man Kirk Fletcher contributes to ” . . . And What”; with harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite being featured on “You’ll Find Love” . . . great friends indeed to have!

However, guests aside, it’s Josh Smith in charge here with his wonderful, fluid playing, on tunes that incorporate blues, funk and rock over the 12 tracks on this beautiful sounding album, that comes with customary top CrossCut packaging. As previously stated Smith may not be a household name yet – particularly in the UK – but “Over Your Head” is definitely worthy of checking out!

Footnote: “Over Your Head” is available on CD, with the first 2,000 units containing a bonus CD with three radio mixes and two live tracks) and as a double vinyl LP with gatefold sleeve – a limited edition of 1,000 copies, pressed on 180-gram vinyl.
