On Sunday, 5th July, 2015, some of Cumbria’s finest blues and rock musicians will celebrate the life and music of BB King, who died on 14th May, aged 89. BB inspired pretty well every musician who plays the blues today, including all those who will be playing at this event.

‘Blues for BB’ is being organised as a non-profit event by Cockermouth Blues for the benefit of the local community, with the aim of inspiring young musicians. In the spirit of bringing live music to as many people as possible, the gigs will be spread across two local pubs, The Bush Inn and The Fletcher Christian Tavern. The event is free entry and all the musicians are generously giving their time in order to pay tribute to the ‘King of the Blues’.

Cockermouth Blues are finalising the programme, which will start in Fletcher’s at 2 pm. The music will alternate between electric bands playing in Fletcher’s and acoustic musicians performing in The Bush Inn. The event will be compered by Mark Singleton, who is well known to both Maryport Blues Festival and Carlisle Blues Festival audiences.

So far, the band line-up includes The Olly Alcock Band, The Bullfrogs, South Quay, Crow Dog, Secure Unit and Sidetrack Rockin’ Blues. South Quay and Secure Unit will feature well-known Cumbrian drummer Frank Hall. Acoustic sessions will be performed by Buzz Elliott, Andy Atkinson, Keri Farish, Plastic Paddy, Paul Deegan’s Solway Soul Choir and Eric Harpo.

The Big Jam Session will round off the day. It will feature Friends of Cockermouth Blues, musicians who played earlier and ace guitarist Julian ‘Jules’ Carter who is travelling all the way from Knebworth to join in, plus many others.

If you’re going to be in or near the North West on 5th July, put the date in your diary – so you can say ‘I was there when Cockermouth played the Blues for BB’!
